Real Madrid secured a vital victory over rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday and the Spanish press believe it was a turning point in what has been a difficult season.

Goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale secured the victory after Antoine Griezmann had levelled following Casemiro’s opener.

The result saw Santiago Solari’s men close the gap on leaders Barcelona to five points, the Catalans due to visit Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.

The papers in Spain were full of praise with both AS and Marca leading with headlines about the ‘return’ of Madrid.

The former went on to say that the Spanish giants are now ready to fight for everything until the end of the season. 

Both outlets also spoke a lot about the impact of VAR, the game having featured a number of controversial decisions.

Atletico were convinced that Jose Gimenez fouled Vinicius Junior just outside the box for Ramos’ penalty, before another VAR decision saw the hosts miss out on a spot-kick of their own when Alvaro Morata went over after a slight collision in the box with Casemiro.    

Atletico boss Diego Simeone insisted the technology was not to blame, however, accepting that the better team won.

‘I do not usually talk about the VAR,’ Simeone told reporters. ‘It will clearly improve for the good of everyone. I absolutely do not believe that we have lost because of VAR.

‘It was a tough hard game in which they were better than us, more forceful. They played a very good game and we congratulate them.’

England reined in their natural instincts to reach stumps on day one on 231 for four having been inserted by West Indies in the third Test.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler led the recovery with a pair of half-centuries, with the former having to be recalled after he was given out off a no ball on 52.

The tourists had threatened to collapse after falling to 69 for three, and then losing captain Joe Root for just 15.

But Stokes and Buttler rallied, adding 124 in 35.1 hard-fought overs in the first-innings in St Lucia.

Stokes, who had made it all the way back to the dressing room when he learned of his bizarre reprieve, said: ‘In international cricket you shouldn’t be walking off, getting into the changing rooms, and then back out there two minutes later. Thank God for technology.

‘I was just sat in my chair and when I heard the shouting I thought someone had got out first ball. It was a good job I didn’t take my pants off.

‘I heard everyone shouting “no ball” and “you’re in”. I had to get myself back into that frame of mind. I said to myself not to look at it as a big opportunity, just try to let it go and make sure I was not out at the end of the day.’
