Ireland ‘took a big step forward’ with victory over Scotland, says captain Rory Best

  • Ireland beat Scotland 22-13 in the Six Nations at Murrayfield on Saturday
  • Conor Murray, Jacob Stockdale and Keith Earls all crossed for the Irish
  • It came a week on from their besting in the 32-20 defeat by England in Dublin

Rory Best insists Ireland took a giant leap ‘mentally and emotionally’ in their patchy 22-13 Guinness Six Nations win in Scotland.

Conor Murray, Jacob Stockdale and Keith Earls all crossed as Ireland returned to winning ways a week on from their physical besting in the 32-20 defeat by England in Dublin.

Johnny Sexton suffered a head injury leaving Joey Carbery to run the game for almost an hour: the Munster star threw an intercept pass for Sam Johnson’s try for Scotland, but conjured the winning score for Earls.

Ireland admitted they were not fully mentally prepared for the physical onslaught against England – but after Saturday’s edgy Edinburgh win, captain Best believes they have restored the right mindset.

‘We’d ideally like to play better and with more fluidity, and probably get on the front foot more,’ said Best.

‘Defensively they came off the line very hard and worked hard at the breakdown. We’ll go back to the pressure we put on and the coaches put on us. We want to be better.

‘Last week was a very strange week. We felt we’d done alright in some areas, and were pretty poor in others with some silly mistakes.

‘But we don’t strive for alright, we want to be the best we can be and last week wasn’t that. Mentally and emotionally we took a big step forward this week.’

Ireland’s defence of their 2018 title got off to the worst possible start with that comprehensive loss to England, but victory in Scotland at least set Joe Schmidt’s men back on track.

Combative hooker Best knows full well Ireland’s title chances will now hinge on others slipping up elsewhere, but the 36-year-old was relieved and delighted to leave Edinburgh with those hopes still alive and kicking.

‘I think winning this game was very important,’ said Best. If you lose two games you’re dead and buried. We’ll have to rely on other people which isn’t where you want to be. But if we hadn’t won this game, we were definitely out of it.

‘It was important to get the result. Obviously we wanted to improve in certain areas, physically, and we wanted to play a lot more like ourselves.

‘We can be better, we can play more rugby, and I’m sure Joe will touch on that when we meet up again.

‘With 15 minutes to go there was an opportunity to go for four tries but we couldn’t get the sustained pressure.’

Mo is gone so I have a new friend: Salah leaves best pal Dejan Lovren confused after shaving off trademark beard as Liverpool reclaim top spot

  • Mohamed Salah starred once again as Liverpool defeated Bournemouth
  • The Egyptian scored taking his tally to 20 goals for the season in all competitions
  • Following the match Salah took to social media to show off a drastic change
  • Posting a clean-shaven picture, Salah revealed his trademark beard had gone

Danny Gallagher For Mailonline

Liverpool fans may do a double-take the next time their heroes run out onto the pitch, when a clean-shaven and considerably younger looking Mohamed Salah takes up his position up front.

The Egyptian maestro has opted to mark the Reds’ return to the top of the Premier League table by shaving off his trademark beard.

Fans will be hoping his mercurial football powers don’t wane as a result, as Jurgen Klopp‘s bid to remain top of the pile and keep rivals Manchester City at bay.

Salah took to social media to show off his new look, posting a selfie from his car on Sunday morning en-route to training.

The current Premier League leading goalscorer looked a tad surprised in the snap, as if coming to terms with his fresh new look.

Salah’s team-mates quickly got in on the act, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain simply posting a response of ‘why?’

Salah’s close friend and team-mate Dejan Lovren also seized the opportunity to make a joke, posing alongside the Egyptian for a picture along with the caption: ‘Mo is gone, so I have a new friend. Welcome Hamed Mahrous Ghaly. I like it.’

Liverpool boss Klopp was elated by the manner in which his side responded on Saturday, and enthused about the Reds’ performance.

‘That is the reaction we wanted to show,’ proclaimed Klopp. ‘We are very self-critical and it was clear we were not happy with the two previous performances.

‘We analysed it and wanted to play convincing football and to perform against Bournemouth. That is what we did – it was outstanding and a very good sign for us.’

However, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe also feels Liverpool got the luck of prospective champions after being told by his coaching staff that Sadio Mane’s opening headed goal after 24 minutes shouldn’t have been allowed.

‘It was a huge moment. We set up to frustrate them and we did restrict them space until the first goal. It was half-a-yard offside, a huge turning point.

‘VAR will help in those situations and I think it will benefit everybody (when it’s introduced in the Premier League next season). That type of goal is clearly offside and we will get the right decision.’
