Claude Puel on the brink? Leicester boss slammed by Peter Schmeichel as Jamie Carragher insists there is ‘no way he’s the manager next season’

  • Leicester City manager Claude Puel is coming under increasing pressure
  • Puel’s position at the helm has been under scrutiny for most of the season
  • Peter Schmeichel feels the Frenchman cannot get the best out of his players
  • Schmeichel’s comments are poignant as his son plays under Puel’s guidance

Pressure continues to mount on Leicester City manager Claude Puel, and the Frenchman’s cause has not been aided this week after scathing comments from pundits Peter Schmeichel and Jamie Carragher.

Schmeichel, whose son plays in goal for Puel at Leicester, gave his view on the situation for Bein Sports, ahead of the Foxes’ crunch game against Tottenham.

Despite his son Kasper being the first choice stopper of Puel, Schmeichel admitted his belief that the Frenchman does not get the best out of his players.

‘Once they get their act together it’s actually not a bad club. They’ve got good players they just don’t have the manager who can get anything of out them,’ said Schmeichel.

‘Once that is sorted out we will see them in the eight to fifth place where I think they belong.’

The comments of the legendary Dane tie in with the recent opinion of fellow pundit Carragher who, when speaking on Sky Sports prior to Leicester kicking off at Spurs, admitted Puel’s days are numbered.

‘I think there is a big problem between the Leicester manager and the senior players in that team, it always feels like he’s one game away from being in real trouble because they’re on a really poor run at this moment,’ Carragher explained.

‘I actually think they’re the best side, when you look at the team and players, outside of the top six. Some times in some ways I admire the manager for making those big decisions.

‘He’s not scared to make them and if they get beat today with Vardy out the side he’s going to get more criticism form supporters. Listen, there’s no way he’s the manager next season. He could even go before the end of the season but he’s now bowing down to the players.’

Puel arrived in English football with Southampton after taking over from Ronald Koeman, but was axed by the club after just one year in charge despite guiding Saints to the Carabao Cup final.

Southampton also registered a respectable eighth place finish, though Puel was dismissed in favour of Mauricio Pellegrino.

Figure influente

Friends and family have gathered to pay their respects to 15-year-old Flamengo youth goalkeeper Christian Esmerio at his funeral after he died in the tragic fire at the club’s training ground on Friday.

Tragedy struck one of Brazil‘s most popular professional football clubs in the early hours of Friday morning as a fire swept through sleeping quarters at their training base, killing 10 people and injuring three teenagers.

Esmerio was one of those who died in the blaze and his loved ones came together on Sunday to honour his life at an emotional ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

In heart-wrenching scenes outside his son’s resting place, father Cristiano Esmerio was seen embracing family members as he broke down in tears. The youngster’s friends were also seen devastated at their loss.

Firefighters were called just after 5am on Friday to the sprawling Ninho de Urubu training grounds in Rio de Janeiro’s western region.

‘We are distraught,’ Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim said outside the complex, where people gathered, some in prayer. ‘This is the worst tragedy to happen to the club in its 123 years.’

He did not take questions from reporters who also were outside the complex but added: ‘The most important thing right now is to minimise the suffering of these families.’

The cause of the fire was not known, but Claudio Castro, vice governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, said authorities were looking at the possibility of a short circuit in an air conditioning unit.

In a statement, the city said the area that burned was registered for parking, not as a dormitory. The statement said an investigation into the licensing process was under way.

Sebastian Rodriguez, the uncle of one of the players who died, 15-year-old Samuel Thomas Rosa, said his nephew never complained about the conditions.

‘He never told me anything bad about the training centre,’ Mr Rodriguez said. ‘He liked the environment and his team-mates there.’

Rio de Janeiro mayor Marcelo Crivella ordered three days of mourning, and President Jair Bolsonaro issued a statement lamenting the fire had taken ‘the young lives at the beginning of pursuing their professional dreams’.

Passion for football runs deep in Brazil, and as news of the tragedy spread, many of the world’s best players and top officials expressed condolences. ‘It’s a sad day for Brazilian soccer,’ tweeted Pele, the country’s most famous player.

Chapecoense, who lost 22 players in a plane crash in 2016, said on Twitter: ‘We are extremely sad and shaken by the news of the fire.’

Flamengo is perhaps the most famous club in the country, with an estimated 40 million fans nationwide.

Among the most famous players to come through the club are Ronaldinho and Zico, former stars on Brazil’s national team; top goalscorer Adriano, who rose to fame at Inter Milan; and current Real Madrid star Vinicius, Jr, who not long ago was living in the building destroyed by the fire.

Joao Pedro da Cruz, a 16-year-old player in the Flamengo youth league, told the G1 news portal that he decided not to spend the night at the facility because the team was not going to train on Friday, and he went to a friend’s house instead.

‘The majority of them (the team) stayed, my friends stayed (at the facility),’ he said. ‘Today I woke up and heard this terrible news.’
