PSG stars jet off home after humbling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United with Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and Co holding big advantage in Champions League tie

Sportsmail Reporter

Bleary-eyed and victorious, the PSG team which handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first loss as Manchester United manager flew home in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Thomas Tuchel’s side beat United 2-0 in the Champions League last-16 first leg, leaving the Premier League giants with a huge task in Paris.

Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show, netting his side’s second. But his team-mates were left waiting for him and Marco Veratti at Manchester airport.

The duo were kept behind for standard drug testing after the game, delaying the PSG plane by an hour.

They finally took off at around 1.20am on Wednesday morning, having made their way through Manchester airport kitted out in their special Champions League leisurewear seen throughout the campaign, made by the Jordan brand.

The game saw Angel Di Maria’s first game back at Old Trafford after leaving Manchester United in 2015.

He signed autographs for fans waiting at the airport, despite having been booed by the home crowd during the match.

His manager believed the jeers spurred him on, with the Argentine turning in a vintage performance in the second half.

He said: ‘In the first half it was a bit hard for him playing right in front of me and losing many easy balls. He had a bit of a hard time because I was close to him.

Midfielder Marco Veratti also had to be drug tested after the game, which PSG won 2-0

‘Maybe he was a bit nervous and a bit overused because he plays all the time for us.

‘I’m happy he stayed confident, he’s always super reliable, he always gives his best and for that it’s easy to forgive him when he has not such a good first half.

‘It’s always dangerous for him from the corners and of course a superb assist, it was a perfect pass for Kylian. It was a nice comeback for him, I’m very happy for him and of course he helped us a lot.’

UK Sport to widen scope of Olympic and Paralympic athlete funding model beyond 2020

UK Sport to widen scope of Olympic and Paralympic athlete funding model to include more sports beyond 2020

  • UK Sport will broaden its Olympic and Paralympic funding beyond 2020
  • It’s a softening of ‘no compromise’ model of funding only likely medal winners
  • Its model will now have three tiers: podium, podium potential and progression

Laura Lambert For Mailonline

UK Sport will broaden its Olympic and Paralympic funding beyond 2020 to support more sports, in a significant softening of its ‘no compromise’ model of only funding likely medal winners.

The elite sports agency announced that in the build-up to Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 it will split its funding model into three separately-assessed tiers – podium, podium potential and a new category called ‘progression’.

The intention is that the new strategy, which comes after a year-long consultation with athletes, governing bodies and the public, will produce more medals from more medallists in more sports.

It is thought that it will spell good news for sports like badminton, basketball and fencing, which have lost out on national lottery and government funding in recent years.

UK Sport chair Dame Katherine Grainger said that the shift in funding approach would create ‘a bigger and more encompassing system’.

She added: ‘We are confident the new strategy will help sustain medal success while enabling more communities to be inspired by the power of high performance sport.’

Sports Minister Mims Davies highlighted the change in direction, away from a so-called ‘medals-at-all-costs’ approach, when telling stakeholders: ‘As we look to fund a wider range of sports, over a longer period of time it is important that these sports inspire and represent our diverse society. Let’s not be afraid to invest in the potential reach and success of currently unfunded sports too.’

There are no details at this stage about how much funding UK Sport will receive from the Government, with a spending review expected to take place shortly.

But outgoing chief executive Liz Nicholls said UK Sport would ‘go for the maximum’ in making its case and said she was ‘confident’ that the Government would recognise the importance of continuing to support the elite sport system.

Around 5,000 people responded to the consultation, with 61 per cent of respondents agreeing that the current medal winning strategy is the right approach to investment in Olympic and Paralympic sport in the UK.

Emiliano Sala’s body to be flown to Argentina before a wake on Saturday at his boyhood club San Martin FC… with Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan offering to pay all costs for repatriation

  • Emiliano Sala’s remains will be flown to Argentina on Friday morning
  • The Cardiff City striker died after a plane he was on crashed in the Channel
  • Sala’s wake will take place on Saturday at his boyhood club of San Martin FC
  • Sala played for there, 300 miles north of Buenos Aires, until he was 15 years old
  • Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has offered to pay for the costs of repatriation

Gerard Couzens for MailOnline

Tragic Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala’s body will be repatriated on Friday ahead of a wake in the gym of his boyhood club.

Julio Muller, mayor of the town of Progreso in the Argentinian province of Santa Fe where Emiliano grew up, confirmed his remains would reach Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires around 9am local time on Friday.

The footballer’s body will then be taken to the provincial capital by road on a six-hour journey before reaching Progreso on Friday night for the wake on Saturday at the San Martin Club gym.

Mr Muller said Emiliano’s mum Mercedes and sister Romina, who travelled to Europe after the light aircraft taking him from France to Cardiff disappeared over the Channel near Guernsey, have already rejoined his lorry driver dad Horacio in Progreso.

Referring to the footballer by his shortened name Emi, he said: ‘Emi’s remains will reach Progreso, 300 miles north of Buenos Aires, late on Friday.

‘The wake will be organised in the gym at San Martin FC.’

San Martin President Daniel Ribero added: ‘Emi’s body is going to reach Argentina from Europe on Friday and on Saturday we will spend several hours saying farewell to him at the club.’

It emerged earlier this week Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan had told Emiliano’s relatives he would pay for the striker to be repatriated.

An inquest at Bournemouth town hall in Dorset heard on Monday the footballer, whose body was recovered in a privately-funded search, died of head and trunk injuries when the plane he was on crashed into the Channel.

The body of the pilot of the single-engine Piper Malibu which disappeared on January 21, 59-year-old David Ibbotson, is yet to be found and his family are insisting the search must go on.

Wife Nora said earlier this week: ‘We just know we can’t leave him out there on his own until we have tried to do everything we can.’

San Martin de Progreso, where the footballer played until he was 15, has already indicated it intends changing the name of its stadium and calling it Estadio Emiliano Sala.

The Argentinian striker was heading from Nantes, where he spent nearly four years, to Cardiff after the Premier League side signed him for a club-record fee of £15million.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman has said the club would pay the fee if they are ‘contractually obliged.’

PSG’s Gianluigi Buffon claims Manchester United were architects of their own downfall

‘We made it seem easy… they allowed us to breathe under pressure’: PSG’s Gianluigi Buffon claims lacklustre Manchester United were architects of their own downfall at Old Trafford

Glen Williams For Mailonline

Gianluigi Buffon believes Manchester United were the architects of their own downfall and allowed Paris Saint-Germain to ‘make it seem easy’ to come away from Old Trafford with a win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s undefeated start to life at United came to a shuddering halt on Tuesday evening after Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe scored within seven minutes to claim a crucial first-leg victory in the Champions League last-16 tie.

Solskjaer’s United were put to the sword after making two enforced changes around half time — Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial were replaced by Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata — and it ultimately saw their hard-pressing game fall by the wayside.

PSG needed no second invitation and seized their opportunities and veteran goalkeeper Buffon was impressed with the manner in which his side claimed the victory.

‘We made it seem easy by putting everything we had into those 90 minutes, the unity that is fundamental in this competition,’ he told Sky Sport Italia.

‘We took some risks, but they allowed us to breathe when under pressure and break their attempt at pressing.

‘In such a balanced tie, that is worth so much.’

It now means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have a mountain to climb in the second leg in Paris

It was Solskjaer’s first taste of defeat in the United dugout and it has left his side with a mountain to climb in the second leg in Paris in three weeks’ time.

They will be without the in-form Paul Pogba, who was sent off on Tuesday to compound the defeat, and will sweat on the injuries of both Lingard and Martial.

Given the Parisians’ two away goals, it would take something monumental to turn this tie around for the English giants.
