Brian Majoribanks For The Scottish Daily Mail
New Hibernian head coach Paul Heckingbottom has hailed Sir Alex Ferguson as a big influence as he vowed to leave no stone unturned in his bid to bring success to Easter Road.
The former Leeds United and Barnsley boss signed a three-and-a-half year deal and will be assisted by former Scotland and Middlesbrough defender Robbie Stockdale.
Heckingbottom vowed to uphold the club’s proud attacking traditions by introducing aggressive, exciting football as he spoke of being inspired by the legendary attack-minded Ferguson during his time as a youth trainee at Manchester United.

Former Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Hibs
He said: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson made a big impression on everyone. His values were imprinted on the club. He was Manchester United and that’s why they were so successful.
‘It’s an honour to be named head coach of Hibernian Football Club – a club with a rich history and commitment to playing attacking football.
‘In terms of my style of football, I love to play on the front foot, press teams and be really aggressive.
‘I like my teams to win the ball high up the pitch and play forward, create chances and score goals. And there’s a lot of players in this Hibs squad capable of doing that.
‘I will give everything I have to be a success here. Supporters can be assured of that.’ Heckingbottom’s arrival in Edinburgh yesterday came 24 hours after negotiations broke down between Hibs and former Blackburn Rovers and Oxford City boss Michael Appleton.

Another former Manchester United trainee, Appleton emerged as the club’s top target after Hibs received 100 applications for the post.
He travelled to Edinburgh on Friday but talks stalled due to concerns over salary and relocation expenses.
Hibs then turned to Heckingbottom, who had a successful spell at Barnsley but was sacked by Leeds United last summer after just four months at Elland Road.
But the Leith outfit’s failure to land Appleton saw the club under fresh scrutiny after the chaotic departure of previous boss Neil Lennon and his assistant Garry Parker last month.
Lennon and Parker were both suspended by chief executive Leeann Dempster after an incident involving Swiss striker Florian Kamberi.
But following an internal review, Hibs released a statement confirming the pair had left the club ‘by mutual consent’ adding that ‘neither Neil nor Garry has been guilty of any misconduct or wrongdoing and no disciplinary process has been commenced.’
Last night Hibs chairman Rod Petrie hailed Lennon’s replacement, who will be unveiled to the media tomorrow – 24 hours before taking charge for the first time when Hamilton Accies visit Easter Road.
Petrie said: ‘We are pleased to have secured the services of Paul and Robbie and look forward to seeing what they have to bring to the Hibernian training centre and Easter Road stadium.
‘Paul excelled throughout the interview process. He is bright, driven and hungry to help drive the club forward. As a board we will do all that we can to assist him in his endeavours.’ Hibs chief executive Dempster hopes the new head coach can bring the type of style and success that saw him win promotion to the Championship at Barnsley and win the EFL Trophy in 2016.
Dempster said: ‘Paul made a really positive impression on us from our first meeting with him.
‘His work at Barnsley speaks for itself, where he was able to combine the kind of dynamic, attacking football our own fans appreciate with the development of some talented young players.
‘With the structure we already have in place, Paul is the right person to embrace that support and take it to a new level.
‘On behalf of everyone at Hibernian, we would like to extend a warm welcome to both Paul and Robbie.’

‘Ignorant,’ said James DeGale of Chris Eubank, 10 days before their grudge fight.
‘Can’t box,’ he followed up with, adding insult to verbal injury.
‘Hasn’t beaten any top fighter,’ said the first British Olympic champion to win a world title of the younger man threatening to terminate his career in the O2.

James DeGale is upping the ante ahead of his fight with Chris Eubank Jnr this month

DeGale takes on Eubank Jnr at the 02 Arena in London in 10 days on February 23
‘Delusional,’ he summed up Son of Eubank.
Chunky was talking as fast as he was feinting the punches through the cold morning air with which he intends to teach Junior a boxing lesson.
Eubank ignorant?
‘Too ignorant to listen to his new trainer and learn,’ said DeGale of Eubank finally hiring a full-time head coach, Mayweather protege Nate Vasquez.
Can’t box?
‘Not with the likes of me,’ is the two-time world super-middleweight champion’s judgement. ‘Just doesn’t have the skills.
‘Give him credit for having the heart, the guts and the strength conditioning to be able to mix with the best. But he doesn’t have the tools to beat us.
‘With his courage he won’t go away. He’ll stick in there. But he can’t beat me.’ That is why DeGale has ‘rediscovered my love of training and boxing and am back to my prime condition.’

DeGale claims that Eubank Jnr hasn’t beaten any top fighter ahead of their bout
Also why he is shifting away from his initial prediction, at 33, that this could be his last fight to saying: ‘I’m looking at another two years of bigger fights than this now I’ve put in the months of work to be sure I beat Eubank.
‘Compare our resumes. He’s lost his only two fights against top-flight opponents, Billy Joe Saunders and George Groves.
‘I beat Andre Dirrell in America to win my first IBF world title. I had that brutal draw with Badou Jack in New York in a unification fight to keep my belt.
‘I beat Lucian Bute over there.’ Eubank’s only claim to world honours thus far is the fringe IBO belt acquired against unrated New Zealander Renold Quinlan.
That now vacant title will be at stake at the O2 but DeGale says: ‘With all due respect to the IBO that’s not one of the four main world titles.
‘I’ll be happy to carry the belt around the ring at the end but it’s not what I’m fighting for.

The 33-year-old believes that his opponent does not have the skills to box with him
‘After I beat Eubank I’m looking at fighting for a third world title. Possibly against Callum Smith.
‘He looked the bollocks when beating George Groves. Huge – I don’t know how he makes super-middle – strong and long. But as everyone knows by now I never duck a challenge.’
Al Haymon, the mysterious Svengali of US boxing, knew that when he made DeGale one of the first of his multi-million dollar signings.
Says Chunky, raising his hands in prayer: ‘Thank God for Al. He’s not only the most powerful but also the most loyal man in boxing.
‘People questioned why I went to America but he’s got me my big fights – this one included – and my healthy bank account. More British fighters should sign with him.’ Eubank has already done just that. DeGale smiles and says: ‘That’s just Al covering his bases.’ So Chris Jr delusional?

Chunky was talking as fast as he was feinting the punches as he intends to teach Jnr a lesson
Says Chunky: ‘He and his dad kept saying he could beat Canelo [Alvarez] and [Gennady] Golovkin. Yes, delusional.
‘He says I will be weak and die in the fight because daughters of his friends keep seeing me out on the town drinking and I’m not dedicated.
‘Well I like partying after fights but I’ve seen him in a club with a bottle of vodka in his hand.’
Then, after going through an impressive workout, DeGale delivered this parting shot: ‘Junior delusional. He’s mad.’
