Arsenal are hoping to appoint a director of football imminently after speaking to former player Marc Overmars and Roma’s director of football Monchi.

Sven Mislintat is leaving his position as head of recruitment this month and former chief executive Ivan Gazidis left to join AC Milan in September.

And the Sun have revealed they want someone to help save their season now.

The Gunners lost to BATE Borisov in the first leg of their last-32 Europa League tie on Thursday in what is considered their best route of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Unai Emery’s side sit in fifth place but have recently been overtaken by a resurgent Manchester United in fourth.

Overmars, who is now a director at Ajax, does not think Alexis Sanchez made a good decision by leaving Arsenal.

He told ADN Deportes: ‘I have great respect for Alexis because he did extremely well in Arsenal, I do not know if it was a good decision to leave.

‘English football changes you, it turns you around, it took me a step forward. Arsene Wenger arrived a year before me, Dennis Bergkamp made a big impression in England, it was a fantastic time, I think we changed the history of the club a bit.’

The Dutchman added: ‘This type of player was very important for Arsenal because that’s where they take you.

‘After Alexis, Arsenal tried to sign another player like that but he was not given, so he could go back to Arsenal.’

Gloucester 24-17 Exeter: Ben Morgan scores late try and hosts hold on by skin of their teeth in thrilling climax

  • Gloucester dominated game but their superiority was not reflected by score
  • Ben Morgan scored three minutes from time as Kingsholm erupted
  • Chiefs then had five metre lineout and ran through a number of phases
  • But defence held firm and victory solidified Gloucester’s place in play-off spots

Press Association Reporter

Gloucester downed league leaders Exeter with a whole-hearted performance to record a deserved 24-17 victory at Kingsholm.

It took a try from Ben Morgan three minutes from time to get Gloucester over the line as the home side blew a number of opportunities which would have seem them record a comfortable win.

Jason Woodward, Willi Heinz and Morgan scored Gloucester’s tries with Billy Twelvetrees converting all three and kicking a penalty.

Exeter’s tries came from Nic White and Tom O’Flaherty. Joe Simmonds kicked a penalty and conversion with Gareth Steenson also adding a conversion.

Gloucester had the better of the early stages but with their first foray into opposition territory, Chiefs took a ninth-minute lead.

The visitors turned down a kick at goal in favour of a driving line-out and were rewarded when scrum-half White darted over from close range.

Simmonds converted but Gloucester responded with a simple penalty from Twelvetrees before wasting a golden opportunity to take the lead when Woodward knocked on when he had an unopposed 20-metre run to the try line.

Moments later, Gloucester had another opportunity when Ruan Ackermann burst away from a maul but the flanker delayed his pass to Franco Mostert and the chance was lost.

After 26 minutes, the home side’s pressure was finally rewarded with their first try. A well-judged cross-field kick from Danny Cipriani was superbly collected by Ollie Thorley, whose inside pass gave Woodward the chance to atone for his earlier error when he raced over.

Twelvetrees converted from the touchline before his side threw away another golden opportunity when hooker Franco Marais knocked on five metres out, leaving Gloucester with just a narrow 10-7 lead at the end of a half they had totally controlled.

After the interval, Exeter suffered a blow when Ian Whitten left the field with an injury but they overcame this setback to draw level with a penalty from Simmonds.

Within minutes, the hosts were back in front when following a driving line-out and a period of sustained pressure, Heinz crashed over.

Another flowing move from Gloucester saw Thorley narrowly denied before Exeter rang the changes in an attempt to reverse their fortunes, with Steenson coming on at fly-half and Simmonds switching to full-back.

The switch paid dividends when a well-timed pass from Steenson sent Matt Kvesic through a huge hole in the home defence before the former Gloucester player sent O’Flaherty over in the corner.

Steenson converted to leave the scores level at 17-17 with 15 minutes remaining before Twelvetrees was off target with two angled 35-metre penalty attempts – but Thorley’s creative running set up the winning try for Morgan.

Rejuvenated Jordan Spieth sets the pace in LA with first round 64

Tiger Woods continues to search for glory in his hometown but is put in the shade by Justin Thomas as he is left frustrated on Genesis Open greens

  • Tiger Woods threatened a run at Jordan Spieth with four birdies in a row early on
  • Rory McIlroy started well enough with two early birdies but he also struggled
  • The third member of the group, Justin Thomas, easily took the honours with 66

Derek Lawrenson for the Daily Mail

From tee to green, Tiger Woods could hardly have played any better than he did during a marathon day at the Genesis Open. On the greens, however, the Riviera riddle goes on.

This is the biggest event in golf that the hometown boy has still to win – and he won’t be finally adding this title to his incredible c.v this week unless he can solve the puzzle of the severely sloping greens.

Indeed, Woods and his playing partner Rory McIlroy appeared to be in a personal contest to see who could endure the most frustrating day on the greens.

Jordan Spieth stole the show with an eye-catching first round 64 at the Genesis Open

Woods had four three putts in his first round 70 – and that’s only happened twice before in 1,252 career rounds on the PGA Tour. McIlroy missed any number of putts under 10ft and needed no fewer than 35 putts in all – one more than Tiger – in his disappointing 72.

After a short break, the pair went straight back out to start their second rounds, where they finally gave the hardy thousands who braved the intemperate weather something to shout about. McIlroy had three birdies in his first five holes after lunch, while Tiger had two of his own.

Both, however, were put in the shade by Justin Thomas, the third member of the group. His putting was so good it was as if he was holing not only his own share but that of the other two as well.

Thomas moved serenely to eight under par for the event at the halfway stage of his second round to move alongside revitalised Australian Adam Scott at the top. McIlroy was on two under and Woods on one under.

Earlier, top honours as the first round mercifully came to a close after taking a day and a half to complete went to Americans JB Holmes, who had a hole in one in a fabulous 63, and Jordan Spieth, who carded a 64. Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood both shot 70.
