Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists there is no reason for alarm after first defeat

‘You don’t panic because you’ve lost a game. It doesn’t change the mindset’: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists there is no reason for alarm after suffering first defeat as Manchester United caretaker

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists there is no reason to panic following his first defeat
  • Manchester United’s caretaker boss backed his team to bounce back at Chelsea
  • Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard will be out for between two and three weeks

Chris Wheeler for the Daily Mail

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists there is no reason to panic following his first defeat as Manchester United‘s caretaker manager and has backed his players to bounce back in Monday’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Chelsea.

The 2-0 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain was all the more painful for Solskjaer because Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard sustained injuries that will keep them out of action for between two and three weeks.

However, the United boss said: ‘You don’t panic because you’ve lost a game. You don’t change everything. It doesn’t change the mindset at all.

‘I hate losing games, the boys hate it. They’ve been down, but there’s no point dwelling on it. There are big games with good teams coming up and we need to dust ourselves down.

‘You’ve got to bounce back at this club. You always have challenges and away against Chelsea is tough.

‘We know there was a spell against PSG, seven or eight minutes, when we lost our way. Apart from that, we weren’t too bad.’

Solskjaer was reminded that United beat Chelsea away in the quarter-final en route to winning the FA Cup — and Treble — in 1999.

‘We beat Arsenal and Liverpool as well,’ he added. ‘We did it the hard way then and we will have to do it the hard way this year.’

Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are expected to play in the absence of Martial and Lingard, while Angel Gomes or Tahith Chong could also be in the squad.

Agalega : les travaux ont débuté mercredi

0

[ad_1]

Chelsea can still salvage their season if Eden Hazard follows Roy Keane’s example

Chelsea can still salvage their season if Eden Hazard follows Roy Keane’s example… he must show the mental toughness to play consistently well

  • Eden Hazard can turn Chelsea’s season around if he follows Roy Keane’s lead
  • Keane had the ability to play to his usual exemplary levels when others were not
  • Hazard was exceptionally poor as Chelsea lost 6-0 at Manchester City last week
  • On match day Keane would bring something close to his best and expect it back

Ian Ladyman for the Daily Mail

One of the greatest assets of one of Manchester United‘s greatest players was rarely spoken of.

Roy Keane’s ability to play to his usual exemplary levels when others around him were struggling was among the many things that has made him irreplaceable ever since.

There were none to match Keane on a good day and not many on a bad day either. That said everything for the Irishman’s extreme football talents but also illustrated a mental toughness and fortitude matched by few before and even fewer since.

Really great players maintain standards regardless of everybody else and this is something that Eden Hazard may think about ahead of what appears to be a defining week or so for his Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri.

Chelsea face United in the FA Cup on Monday and then Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final six days later. It feels very much like something very good must happen in one of those fixtures if Sarri’s employment at Stamford Bridge is to continue beyond the summer.

Hazard may feel that he does not owe Sarri very much. The Italian has not spared his players privately or in public as Chelsea’s form has plummeted over the winter and it has seemed a peculiar tactic from a man who has barely had time to get his feet under the table. Hazard was on the end of one of Sarri’s more startling pronouncements when he declared that the Belgian was not a leader.

Nevertheless, if Hazard cares for his legacy at Stamford Bridge before he leaves — as expected — for Real Madrid this summer, then he may wish to start proving Sarri wrong, for his own sake as much as for his coach.

Hazard has done his bit. He has helped Chelsea to two league titles and two domestic cups. He has featured in the PFA’s team of the year four times and won the individual award once, in 2015.

Hazard was awful against Manchester City and must do more to cement his Chelsea legacy

Hazard was awful against Manchester City and must do more to cement his Chelsea legacy

Hazard was awful against Manchester City and must do more to cement his Chelsea legacy

Hidden beneath those pots and pans, however, have been times when Hazard has appeared rather less engaged. The 28-year-old did not enjoy himself under Antonio Conte last season and it showed. Similarly his form fell off a cliff under Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese was sacked in the November 2015.

‘We ended up in a negative spiral,’ was Hazard’s subsequent reflection of that particular period, and with Chelsea in another one right now Sarri will require his very best players to drag them out of it.

Hazard was exceptionally poor as Chelsea lost 6-0 at City last Sunday and while he was not alone, it is times like these that the very best players must show the way.

On match day Keane would bring something near his best to the table and expect the same

Back to Keane again. He would tell you that his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson was not always straightforward. Nor was it with his team-mates. Very few of them ever had his phone number.

Yet on match day Keane would bring something approaching his best to the table and expect everybody around him to follow.

At Chelsea, Hazard may justifiably wonder at some of the recruitment since Conte’s 2017 title win but in the shape of Gonzalo Higuain he does finally have a centre forward of substance to play with.

This season is not yet dead to Chelsea but if they are to emerge from their current state of stasis under Sarri then Hazard will need to be front and central to it.

Hatley calls on England forwards to make up for Vunipola absence

England scrum coach Neal Hatley calls on forwards to raise game for bruising encounter with Wales to make up for absence of Mako Vunipola

  • Mako Vunipola is out for 10 weeks with injury and misses rest of Six Nations
  • His loss is huge blow for England but Ellis Genge and Ben Moon will fill void
  • Scrum coach Neal Hatley wants forwards to ensure Vunipola is not missed

Will Kelleher For The Daily Mail

England’s scrum coach has called on his forwards to raise their game against Wales to make up for the loss of Mako Vunipola.

The Saracens loosehead is out of the rest of the Six Nations tournament with ankle ligament damage, leaving Ellis Genge and Ben Moon fighting it out for the No 1 shirt at the Principality Stadium next Saturday.

‘You don’t really replace someone like Mako, but it is an opportunity for Ben Moon and Ellis Genge,’ said Neal Hatley.

‘Losing someone like Mako, all the other players are going to have to find another three or four per cent but we have full confidence in both Ben and Ellis.’

Hatley is sure that Genge, who took a full part in training on Friday despite limping out of a session on Thursday, will not be riled by the Welsh, who know he doesn’t have the longest fuse in the pack.

‘If you look at him and Kyle Sinkler from 2016 to where they are now it is chalk and cheese,’ Hatley said. ‘We want him to be on the edge, aggressive — that’s how the game is played.

‘Both of them have a good understanding of what the team needs in terms of discipline. They’ve improved massively in that area.’

Meanwhile, Leigh Halfpenny will not play against England as his return to competitive action after concussion problems has been delayed again.

The 30-year-old full-back was not selected for his regional side the Scarlets for today’s match against Benetton in the Pro 14 and Sportsmail understands he is not ready for full-blooded action in the potential Championship decider either.

This withdrawal from club duty seems to rule out Halfpenny playing in Cardiff even though recently he has been fit enough to train, but he is not at a stage where he is ready to start a match.

It is believed Wales want to see him come through a game unscathed before they throw him back into an international after such a long time out.

Halfpenny has not played since November 10 when he was knocked out by a late tackle from Samu Kerevi in the Australia Test.

Halfpenny then attempted to return for the Scarlets on December 29, and was named in their side to face Cardiff Blues but pulled out late after a reoccurrence of concussion symptoms.

Josh Adams, Liam Williams and George North now look most likely to form the Welsh back-three for the England game.

Adams will start on the wing for Worcester against Harlequins in the Premiership, but Williams was not picked by Saracens for their game against Leicester.
