Paul Farbrace to leave England ahead of World Cup and Ashes summer

Paul Farbrace to leave England ahead of World Cup and Ashes summer to become Warwickshire director

  • Paul Farbrace will leave England after the conclusion of their West Indies tour
  • Assistant coach has been appointed as Ashley Giles’ successor at Warwickshire
  • Farbrace began England’s white-ball revolution when he joined in 2015

Paul Newman for MailOnline

The man who kick-started England’s white-ball revolution will leave ahead of the fruition of his work at the World Cup this summer.

Paul Farbrace, the assistant coach and strong right-hand man of Trevor Bayliss, is replacing Ashley Giles as Warwickshire’s sport director and will head to Edgbaston as soon as England complete their Caribbean tour with five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches against West Indies.

It means Farbrace, 51, will leave England before their biggest summer in modern memory, their attempt to win a first ever 50-over World Cup being followed by a home Ashes series against Australia.

The former Kent and Middlesex wicketkeeper was put in charge as interim coach after the departure of Peter Moores in 2015 and so began a revolution in England’s limited-overs cricket which has seen them rise from laughing stock of the international game to become the best 50-over side in the world.

‘I have had five fantastic years with England cricket,’ said Farbrace here in Barbados ahead of England’s white-ball warm-up match on Sunday.

‘It has been a brilliant experience working with world-class coaches, players and support staff.

‘There is never a great time to leave an international set-up and despite what will be a fantastic summer for English cricket, the opportunity to shape the future of one of the game’s biggest counties was too much to resist.

‘It would have been tough for me to have turned down the opportunity once Warwickshire showed an interest in me.

‘I am grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my career development.’

The vacancy was created by Giles leaving Edgbaston to become England’s team director and he said today: ‘Paul was integral alongside Andrew Strauss, Trevor Bayliss and Eoin Morgan in transforming our white-ball strategy which has seen us become the best team in the world leading into a World Cup year.

‘His efforts in developing players in the elite environment will benefit him in his new role at Edgbaston.

‘He is an ambitious professional and highly regarded and respected in the game and the opportunity at Warwickshire is something that would have been difficult for him to turn down. I respect his desire to take this on.’

England will now need a new assistant coach for their biggest ever year with Paul Collingwood, here as white-ball fielding coach, and bowling coach Chris Silverwood both highly regarded and very much in the frame.

Bayliss will leave after the Ashes in September and Giles is currently looking into what coaching structure England will have to replace him.

The smart money is on one head coach replacing Bayliss, with South Africa coach Ottis Gibson and Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur among the candidates, and two assistants with extra responsibility for white and red-ball cricket supporting him.

Collingwood and Silverwood will be the favourites to fill those roles but former Essex coach Silverwood also has his supporters for the big job.

Emiliano Sala’s body will be cremated today in his Argentinian home town

The heartbroken sister of Emiliano Sala is set to say her final farewell at the funeral of the tragic football star whose plane crashed down in the English Channel last month.

Fighting back tears, Romina Sala cut a sombre figure as she wrapped herself in an oversized grey hoodie and ignored the mass of press outside her home in the town of Progreso in Argentina, before being driven to her brother’s wake.

Thousands are expected to pay their last respects to the new Cardiff City signing at the wake in the sports hall of his boyhood football club San Martin – some 334 miles northwest of the capital Buenos Aires.

His body – repatriated on Friday on a British Airways flight – was due to be driven to the town early this morning from its overnight resting place at a funeral home in the provincial capital Santa Fe.

Progeso mayor Julio Muller said a religious ceremony will be held at 2pm (local time) in Progresso and will return to the crematorium in Sante Fe at 3,30pm,

The final resting place of the 28-year-old’s ashes was not made clear, with some local speculation they would be buried in Progreso.

Most of the town’s 3,500 inhabitants are expected to say their final farewells to Progreso’s international ambassador.

Sala was being flown from Nantes, France to Cardiff after the club signed him for £15million when the plane he was travelling in crashed down.

His remains were discovered in the crashed Piper Malibu, on February 3, after a private search team found the plane. The official search for him and pilot David Ibbotson was called off after a week.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is continuing to investigate how the plane crashed.

The Cardiff City footballer died from injuries to his head and body.

The remains of Pilot David Ibbotson have never been found and the wreckage of the plane may not be brought to the surface.

At present weather conditions have been deemed too bad to recover it from the seabed off Guernsey.

Thousands of pounds are being raised to fund a rescue mission.

Daughter Danielle told Good Morning Britain today that the family have raised £140,000 as they try to fund a search operation that will cost more than double that amount.

‘If you’ve got hope you shouldn’t give up,’ she said. ‘He wouldn’t stop searching for me.’

Mr Ibbotson’s wife, Nora, told the show that they won’t be able to grieve properly until his body is brought home.

‘We do know he’s gone but we want him back,’ she said. ‘We know he is dead but we just want him home. He’s been a brilliant husband he’s supported us all he was our supporter he was our rock. We feel like he’s just out there on his own at the moment.

‘I know conditions aren’t brilliant and it’s a dangerous sea but we just need to have that last look.’

Brendan Allen, acting senior coroner for Dorset, adjourned proceedings in Bournemouth until November 6 for a pre-inquest review.

He told the hearing this was because an Air Accidents Investigation Branch inquiry into the tragedy could take between six months and a year.

Cardiff City star Sala was identified by his fingerprints after the tragic crash which happened after his record £15million signing to the Welsh club from Nantes in France.
