Gerard Pique urges Barcelona to up their game for Champions League clash with Lyon

‘The only good news is the victory but we have to improve’: Gerard Pique urges Barcelona to up their game for Champions League clash with Lyon

  • Gerard Pique fears Barcelona risk defeat in the Champions League at Lyon
  • He insists they must improve on the performance in the win over Real Valladolid
  • Barca laboured to three points secured by Lionel Messi’s 43rd-minute penalty
  • The influential defender believes they need to significantly improve and quickly

Press Association Sport Staff

Gerard Pique fears Barcelona risk defeat in the Champions League at Lyon on Tuesday if they do not improve on the performance produced in their 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid.

By their standards, Barca laboured to a win secured by Lionel Messi‘s 43rd-minute penalty, and while they sit seven points clear at the top of La Liga, their influential defender believes they need to significantly improve.

‘We didn’t play well, it wasn’t a good game,’ he told Movistar Partidazo. ‘The only good news is the victory, to get back to winning three points but we have to improve. For Tuesday, we have to be better.

‘If not, it will go poorly. You have to find fluidity and play, that is what has brought us titles. If we don’t speed up the ball, we have possession, and we turn into a weak team. This is what we have to improve because our opponents know it.

‘When you play three or four games in a row, your legs start to get heavy. Sometimes the manager (Ernesto Valverde) asks me and I am here to help the team. Tuesday is another battle.’

It was for a challenge on the 32-year-old Pique that Barca were awarded their match-winning penalty, which represented Messi’s 30th goal of the season but came before another he missed, and Pique added: ‘(Michel) knocked into my back, he unbalanced me and I fell.

‘It’s a penalty. On television, they see things but the contact is enough for me to fall. It’s a penalty.’

The 55-year-old Valverde dismissed concerns about his team’s performance, and also around Messi’s missed penalty.

‘If we are able to generate the chances that we have generated in the second part (of this match), things will go well,’ he told the television channel. ‘In the important matches we have been reliable.

‘I was sure (Messi) would score both. He is quite confident in everything and could make some more goals.’

Valladolid remain 15th and threatened by relegation, but despite them again dropping points, manager Sergio Gonzalez saw cause for encouragement from their performance.

‘We came out stronger from this game,’ said the 42-year-old, according to his club’s official website. ‘We have given a good impression and we can leave the Camp Nou with our heads held high.

‘I’m very happy with my players. They have executed (our tactics) very well.’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hails Phil Foden’s ‘Incredible’ double against Newport

‘Phil’s only problem is that he has to compete with Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva’: Pep Guardiola hails Foden after double

  • Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hailed Phil Foden performance at Newport
  • The England prospect scored City’s second and third goals in the FA Cup tie
  • Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez also scored to earn City a place in the last eight
  • Newport boss Michael Flynn was full of praise for his ‘outstanding’ players

Andrew Baldock, Press Association Sport

Pep Guardiola hailed ‘two incredible goals’ from exciting England prospect Phil Foden as Manchester City comfortably negotiated a testing FA Cup mission against Newport at Rodney Parade.

Foden struck twice in the second half to help steer City home 4-1 following a scoreless first period.

And City boss Guardiola was quick to shower praise on the 18-year-old.

‘Phil’s only problem is that he has to compete with Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva,’ Guardiola said.

‘He’s a player who is ready to play. Today was a good test for him, and this will be good for him.

‘He learnt a lot and he helped us to win the game with two incredible goals.

‘He has the mentality and ability to score goals when he is near the box. He was brilliant.’

City kept their quadruple hopes alive as Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez also struck in the second period to ensure City’s class eventually told against opponents 82 places below them on the league ladder.

Padraig Amond maintained his record of scoring in every round for Newport two minutes from time, but hopes of a dramatic comeback were brief as Foden’s second and Mahrez finished the job.

Newport have beaten Leeds, Leicester and Middlesbrough, as well as drawing with Tottenham, at Rodney Parade in the last 14 months, and they again emerged with credit for frustrating City for so long.

Guardiola added: ‘It was really tough. What they (Newport) do, they do incredibly well.

‘Every free-kick and throw-in is difficult, and we suffered in the first 20 minutes because we needed time to adapt.

‘We finished well and we produced an incredible performance in the second half.

‘I’m so delighted to keep going in this incredible, prestigious competition, and now we are in the quarter-finals, so I must say well done to the players.

‘Football is not always playing on the biggest stages and on good surfaces. We had to adapt, and it can only help us be a better team.

‘We can play at home against Chelsea and do a good performance, but coming here is completely different with the different opponent, different approach and the atmosphere and everything.

‘I am quite surprised with the atmosphere. The support of the team was incredible, it was nice to hear them chanting ‘Who are you? Who are you?”

‘If you come here and don’t take it seriously, big teams will go out, and they have. Sometimes it’s easier to play against Arsenal and Chelsea and in the Champions League.’

Newport’s cup run is now over for another season, but they have made more than £1million from it and kept themselves firmly on the football map.

County manager Michael Flynn was full of praise for his 'outstanding' players after the match

County boss Michael Flynn said: ‘I am very proud of the players. I thought they were outstanding.

‘I am a little bit disappointed with the last two goals we conceded, because we got back into it and we just wanted that one chance, but we didn’t hold on.

‘I was buzzing at half time, especially after watching them (against Chelsea) last week. They were 4-0 up after 24 minutes against a much bigger club than us.

‘Getting to share the touchline with Pep Guardiola was magical for me. He said ‘you should be proud, you are doing a fabulous job, and good luck’.

‘Manchester City are such an excellent team. The players are full of class, the manager is full of class. They invited our players into their changing room, and that means a lot for any player, especially League Two ones.

‘I can’t speak highly enough of Manchester City and their manager. He is a serial winner and he is also full of respect.’

When nothing is certain, anything is possible ✨. Trust the beauty of not knowing what lies ahead.

When I wrote my first blogpost back in 2006, I never knew where it would lead. It wasn’t my ultimate aim to be sponsored (and yet I got that), or work with brands (did that too), or meet incredible people and form communities (although that turned out to be an amazing gift). Deep within me I always knew I wanted my words to touch someone because bringing joy through writing; that’s one of the purposes for which I’ve been created. A calling if you will. Now I blog full-time. It’s my job (even if you don’t think it’s a “real one”). And now over a decade later, when I receive fan mail (still feels strange to say) of people sharing how grateful they are that I shared my heart, as if speaking directly into the exact situation or circumstance they’re dealing with, and how it’s bringing joy, or inspiring positive action, MY HEART SWELLS ❤️. I am thankful for each one of you that I get to write for.

If you’re in a season where you have no idea what the future holds for you, take heart. Know that there’s always a power bigger than us that controls everything. You will flourish. You will bloom. You will find comfort. You will find peace. ✨ T R U S T … you don’t always need to know the ‘how’ or ‘what’. Will you trust the beauty of not knowing what tomorrow brings?

Marseille 2-0 Amiens: Mario Balotelli makes it three goals in four games for new club after scoring sublime effort in comfortable Ligue 1 win for hosts

  • Mario Balotelli scored again in Marseille’s 2-0 win against Amiens on Saturday
  • The Italian striker took his tally to three in four games since joining from Nice
  • Winger Florian Thauvin’s 12th goal of the campaign put Marseille ahead

Mario Balotelli scored a fine goal in Marseille’s 2-0 home win against Amiens on Saturday, taking his tally to three in four games since joining from Nice.

The Italian striker failed to score in 10 games for Nice this season, and questions were raised about whether he was match fit when Marseille signed him last month.

But he’s turned the talk into whether his goals can help Marseille push for third place in the French league, and a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds. Marseille moved into fourth place and six points behind third-placed Lyon.

After winger Florian Thauvin’s 12th goal of the campaign put Marseille ahead in the first half – with Balotelli involved in neat approach play – Balotelli struck six minutes later.

Receiving the ball with his back to goal, he controlled it expertly on his thigh before swiveling and placing an angled shot into the bottom left corner.

Balotelli had a headed goal ruled out for offside midway through the second half, following a video review.

Hugo Lloris insists Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min is in the best form of his career

[ad_1]

‘He has a lot of skills and at the moment he is playing at his best’: Hugo Lloris insists Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min is enjoying the most impressive form of his career

  • Hugo Lloris thinks Tottenham’s Son Heung-min is in the best form of his career
  • Son has carried the goalscoring burden in the absence of injured Harry Kane
  • The Korean forward has netted 13 goals in his last 16 games in all competitions

James Sharpe For Mailonline

Hugo Lloris believes Tottenham forward Son Heung-min is enjoying the best form of his career and is now having ‘big impact in the big games’.

Son has carried the goalscoring burden for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the absence of the injured Harry Kane and has netted 13 goals in his last 16 appearances in all competitions, with strikes in each of his last four outings – all victories for Tottenham.

The South Korea international opened the scoring in Tottenham’s 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League knockout clash to help Spurs put one foot into the quarter-final.

‘Sonny has been very consistent in the past few seasons and he is improving individually his stats and his big impact in the big games,’ said Lloris. ‘That’s why the gaffer, the club and his team-mates have faith.

‘He’s very talented, he has a lot of skills and at the moment he is playing at his best.’

While Tottenham’s title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool are both in action during the coming week, Spurs do not play again until Saturday having had the weekend off due to being knocked out of the FA Cup in the previous round.

Man City faced Newport in the competition on Saturday while both they and Liverpool are engaged in Champions League action this week.

Lloris is planning to enjoy some ‘holiday’ time with his family amid a break that the goalkeeper believes has come at the perfect time for Tottenham who will ‘need everyone’ in their push for European and Premier League glory.

Kane and Dele Alli are both set to return from injury ahead of schedule which could coincide with Tottenham’s run of huge fixtures. Spurs sit five points adrift of Man City and Liverpool.

After a trip to Burnley, Spurs face three huge matches with Premier League clashes against Chelsea and Arsenal before the second leg against Dortmund.

‘We all know it was a tough period in the last few weeks and it’s a good moment to switch off a little bit and enjoy time with our family and friends, and then to be back next week with a fresh mind and ready to work,’ said Lloris.

‘It’s always better for the players being injured to come back to a winning team, it takes pressure off their shoulders.

‘But we need everyone now, there are three or four months to go and we need to give our best.

‘We know in football nothing is done and things can turn very easily if you don’t respect basics.

‘We just need to forget about this result, keep the right feeling and confidence from this game because the second leg will be tough.’
