MARTIN KEOWN: Hitting rock bottom could jolt Chelsea into life

When you get beaten 6-0 like Chelsea did at Manchester City, there is a feeling of total embarrassment within the group.

I lost 6-0 once in my career, with Aston Villa against Nottingham Forest, and I experienced those same feelings.

In the days that followed that defeat, I didn’t want to leave the house. This Chelsea team have been rocked to the core but it might take hitting rock bottom to jolt their season back into life. Now they have to show pride in their performance.

They have to play for the shirt, and what an opportunity they have to show that they are willing to do that when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United visit on Monday night.

Maurizio Sarri has admitted that his players are difficult to motivate and you never know which Chelsea team are going to turn up.

Think back to their 2-0 win over City at Stamford Bridge and the Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham. This is a side who are capable of brilliant performances when they are up for it.

The Blues stars must show some pride and play for the shirt if they are to get out of this slump

I make them slight favourites to win against United on Monday evening.

It has not been an ideal week for United. Solskjaer suffered his first set-back since returning to the club and tactically, his team were taken to the cleaners by Paris Saint-Germain.

United could not cope with PSG playing with a back three. The French champions pushed their wide players high up the pitch, forcing United into retreat. When Juan Mata came off the bench, he spent most of the time at right back.

The key strength for Solskjaer’s team is the way they counter-attack in numbers with plenty of pace and no fear.

Chelsea are weak defensively but they will not have to deal with the pace of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, who are both injured. Instead they are likely to face a front three of Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

United showed PSG far too much respect in their Champions League loss and they cannot afford to do the same to Chelsea.

If fear starts to creep back into these players’ performances, their FA Cup dream will come to an abrupt end at Stamford Bridge.

I was 38 years old when I hung up my boots — the same age as Ashley Cole now.

Watching the full back sprint down the left wing as Derby chased a second-half comeback at Brighton on Saturday, you could see he has lost none of his determination to win.

He’s kept himself fit, too. Mentally, you can want to keep going but your body has to come with you. Derby decided against throwing him in at the deep end and rightly so.

They know they will have to manage his minutes, and Cole will have to be honest about how he is feeling too. But even at the age of 38, he can be very useful for Frank Lampard at Derby this season.

Pep Guardiola has to select his best XI for Manchester City in the Premier League and unfortunately for Riyad Mahrez, he has not made the cut lately.

The £60million forward may feel frustrated but he has to keep fighting. You can arguably impress Guardiola more when you’re out of the team than in it.

You do that by showing him you are willing to do the work and get behind the group when you’re not playing.

Wolves success in FA Cup and league should not surprise

Do not be surprised that Wolves have reached the FA Cup’s quarter-finals and are seventh in the Premier League.

Just look at the quality in their squad.

Joao Moutinho, who started in midfield against Bristol City yesterday, has 113 caps for Portugal. Raul Jimenez has appeared 70 times for Mexico. Full back Jonny, who they signed from Atletico Madrid, is a Spain international.

Their Portuguese goalkeeper, Rui Patricio, was rested for their fifth-round clash and he has 77 caps.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has talented players at his disposal and we should not be underestimating this team or their experience. They are now just one win from an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley because of it.

An awful run of form last season saw Brighton win once in 14 Premier League games midway through the campaign but they reached the FA Cup’s quarter-finals.

Chris Hughton’s side now find themselves with only one win in their last 11 league outings and, once again, they have got to the last eight.

It is a difficult juggling act but Hughton, who won the FA Cup twice as a Tottenham player, will be desperate to fare better this year and hope for another home tie next.

Watford made 11 changes in the previous two FA Cup rounds amid a busy winter workload but only five against Queens Park Rangers.

What helped them win 1-0 at Loftus Road was that Javi Gracia named players who were determined to get that result and avoid an upset, such as Troy Deeney.

The captain said afterwards they did ‘not want to be the ones who went out’. Now, they will be one of six top-flight sides left in the last eight.

Gianfranco Zola plays good cop to Maurizio Sarri’s bad cop

Gianfranco Zola plays good cop to Maurizio Sarri’s bad cop as Chelsea assistant looks to instil positivity after Bournemouth and Man City thrashings

  • Maurizio Sarri and Gianfranco Zola seem to have a good cop, bad cop routine
  • Chelsea boss Sarri is the direct disciplinarian while Zola comforts the players
  • Sarri spoke with brutal honesty after back-to-back away league thrashings
  • While his managerial assistant tried to instil a sense of positivity in the aftermath

Kieran Gill for the Daily Mail

Maurizio Sarri rips his players apart, then Gianfranco Zola picks up the pieces. It has become the Chelsea way — the old good cop, bad cop routine.

Head coach Sarri is the direct, no-nonsense disciplinarian. His assistant Zola is the nice guy who puts arms around shoulders and remembers what it was like to be a player.

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 4-0 and 6-0 Premier League defeats by Bournemouth and Manchester City, Sarri spoke with brutal honesty. Zola then tried to instil a sense of positivity.

Chelsea bounced back with a 2-1 win over Swedish side Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday, but the real test awaits at Stamford Bridge on Monday against Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round.

‘You know Maurizio,’ Zola said. ‘He’s very straightforward. You can see through him. He says what he thinks. He feels better when it’s like that.

‘Sometimes he’s strong in what he says, but always very honest.’

Asked if Sarri is short-tempered, Zola paused, smiling as he looked up and searched for the right words. ‘He’s very passionate,’ he answered.

‘When he’s at work, he’s at work. The more you know him, the more you like it. Sometimes he’s strong and doesn’t go round the corner — he goes straight to the point.

‘I speak to the players but I don’t make it too complicated. I know that when things aren’t going the way you want, a lot of things come to mind, negative things.

‘But this is not the moment to doubt it. What we’re trying to do is ambitious in a competitive league and it’s not easy. But we believe it’s the right way and we carry on.’

Sarri has been accused of stubbornness when it comes to his ‘Sarriball’ system. ‘How do you know we are not making changes?’ said Zola. ‘We are adjusting a few things.

‘Two years ago, you were probably asking the same questions to (Manchester City boss) Pep Guardiola.

‘You were asking if he’d keep playing from the back all the time. He said this was not in discussion and part of his game, even in the difficult moments.

‘There are questions about what we are doing, a lot of doubts. We are adapting to the league but we don’t change what we believe is good for this club because otherwise we are nothing.

‘Not everything comes together straight away.’

Aviva in the frame to be new title sponsor for England team.. while BBC are stumped by talkSPORT

0

[ad_1]

The FA finally appear to be making progress in the search for a new title sponsor for the England team, with Aviva among those interested.

It is almost two years since Vauxhall announced they would terminate their seven-year headline sponsorship deal with England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland after the 2018 World Cup, worth £6million a year to the FA.

Sports Agenda understands, however, that the FA commercial team led by Mark Bullingham have a number of interested parties, with insurance giants Aviva, who have enjoyed major sponsorship deals with rugby and athletics, prominent among them.

The FA are also looking for a new chief executive and senior figures are optimistic they will beat the Premier League to finding a new CEO, even though the two organisations have employed the same firm of head-hunters.

The Premier League job was always considered more attractive than succeeding Martin Glenn at the FA, not least because of the challenge of working with the blazers on the FA council.

How times have changed. While the Premier League have now been rejected by their first two choices, the FA are said to have a decent list of applicants.

Craig Bellamy awaits academy decision

When Craig Bellamy meets Cardiff City officials on Monday to discover the outcome of an investigation into claims that he bullied Under 18 players at the club’s academy, one hopes he does not react in the same way as when told he would not be succeeding Chris Coleman as Wales manager.

Bellamy interviewed brilliantly for the job, impressing with his diligent preparation and explanation of how he has tempered the fiery attitude he had as a player to become a thoughtful coach.

But Sports Agenda understands that the 39-year-old, who stepped down as Cardiff’s Under 18 coach six weeks ago but insists he has always been fair, could not hide his upset when told the FAW had decided to give Ryan Giggs the role instead.

BBC are stumped by talkSPORT

It seems some at the BBC have not taken playing second fiddle to talkSPORT during England’s cricket tour of the West Indies with particularly good grace.

The commercial station, which won the rights to broadcast England’s tours of Sri Lanka and West Indies — as well as trips to South Africa (2020) and India (2021) — from BBC’s Test Match Special, has been referred to, rather sniffily, as ‘tabloid radio’.

And some Beeb employees continue to expect the privileges — in terms of player access and one-on-one interviews — they enjoy as rights-holders to England home matches.

News UK, the owners of talkSPORT, have also been monitoring Cricket Social, the offbeat commentary service broadcast on the BBC website from Salford, to ensure it does not stray into ball-by-ball action.

The irony of Test Match Special stalwart Jonathan Agnew having to contribute to the Cricket Social has not been lost on those who remember his obsession with Test Match Sofa, the original interactive commentary service started by Daniel Norcross — now Agnew’s BBC colleague.

The cricket correspondent, who earns up to £189,999 a year according to the BBC pay report, was apoplectic when The Cricketer acquired Test Match Sofa in 2012 and resigned from the magazine’s board in protest.

The day John Barnes pulled a fetlock!

The decision to host the Randox Health Grand National weights lunch in Liverpool for the first time last week was a big success — and the event will stay there in 2019.

This year’s lunch boasted a Scouse theme, with a Beatles-infused soundtrack at the Cunard building on the banks of the Mersey and guests including gymnast Beth Tweddle and a video welcome from Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Ex-Liverpool star John Barnes also told how on his only trip to the Grand National — ‘at a time when players could drink’ — he pulled a hamstring racing Alan Hansen from Becher’s Brook. ‘I was out two weeks and no one knew how I was injured,’ he said.

Caterers for the event had to be as quick on their feet as Barnes in his pomp when one table, including a Grand National-winning trainer not known for watching his figure, requested a cheese board rather than the dessert on the menu. A dash to the local Tesco saved the day.

Serious plans to revamp the Fed Cup revamp

Tennis authorities have been taking flak for developing new men’s team events while seemingly failing to do anything for the women’s game.

But there are finally signs of action with a serious Fed Cup revamp in the works. The plan being discussed is to create a play-off round next year involving 16 nations competing to find eight qualifiers for a finals week in one city, possibly in Asia around October.

The victorious eight nations would be joined by the previous year’s champions and runners-up, plus two wildcards, leaving 12 nations to compete for the title.

The proposal has hefty support and would simplify the unfathomable current system of two World Groups.

Burger King and balls for the Borisov boys

Passengers in economy on Friday morning’s Belavia flight from Minsk to London Gatwick were surprised to find themselves sitting next to players and staff from BATE Borisov, who had humbled Arsenal 1-0 in the Europa League the night before.

After snaffling Burger King meals for breakfast, the Belarussian side filled the plane with balls, bibs, cones and water bottles, and then checked goalposts, kit bags and even full-sized training mannequins into the hold ahead of Thursday’s return leg.

There was so much equipment that a passenger was hit in the leg by a stray goalpost making its way round the carousel.

Blackout lifted for FA Cup tie

Despite the TV football blackout from 2.45pm to 5.15pm on a Saturday, BT Sport agreed with the FA that they could show Brighton’s FA Cup clash with Derby until it concluded.

Had the 12.30pm kick-off gone to extra time and penalties, it would not have finished until after 3pm.

Though Brighton won 2-1 in 90 minutes so the rule wasn’t broken.

Agent Matt Southall out of work

Aston Villa fans might breathe a sigh of relief after learning of the travails of former football agent Matt Southall.

The Manchester-based businessman was credited as being part of a consortium who tried to buy Villa last June and was also linked with a takeover of Bolton in 2017.

He has now been ordered to pay more than £10,000 in unpaid legal fees to IPS Law but has claimed he is unable to do so as he does not work and has no means of income.

Jose Mourinho did not watch Manchester United’s defeat to PSG

‘I know every player in the Premier League’: Jose Mourinho did not watch Manchester United’s defeat against PSG because he is too familiar with the players… and drops hint where he could be managing next

Jack Kinnersley For Mailonline

Jose Mourinho did not watch Manchester United‘s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain because he knows Premier League players too well.

The Portuguese boss was sacked by United in December after losing to rivals Liverpool 3-1.

Mourinho was spotted at Lille casting an eye over Ligue 1 talent on Sunday as he looks for his next adventure but is not interested in the Red Devils.

‘No, I didn’t watch it,’ Mourinho told beIN SPORTS.

‘I watch games from time to time, but I prefer to watch other leagues. The Premier League, I know every player in it.

‘I can imagine myself as a coach in Ligue 1,’ he added, when asked if he wanted to manage in the French top flight.

‘I am a man who has worked in four different countries, I like to know and learn other cultures. Working in a new championship would be a fantastic experience.

‘For now I’m calm, I try to live better with my family and friends and I work to get the right opportunity to go back to training.

‘Two to three months [without a job] is okay, afterwards it’s more difficult. I hope to have the opportunity to come back stronger.

‘My project is my project as a person and coach, to improve myself, to be better, to think all days about my profession, which is also a passion. But this is not the time to talk with clubs.’

Mourinho has been linked with the PSG job in the past and has been recently eyed for a move to Real Madrid or Inter Milan.
