Chelsea fans chant ‘F*** Sarri-ball’ and ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ while Manchester United fans jokingly call for return of Jose Mourinho during FA Cup match

  • Maurizio Sarri was subject to chants from his own fans at Stamford Bridge
  • Chelsea fell two goals behind to Manchester United in FA Cup fifth round tie
  • For the 20th time, Sarri swapped Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley mid-game

Sportsmail Reporter

Chelsea fans turned on boss Maurizio Sarri with chants of ‘F*** Sarri-ball’ and ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ during their FA Cup fifth round clash against Manchester United.

The home supporters began to jeer when Sarri replaced Mateo Kovacic with Ross Barkley – the 20th time this season he has switched the two midfielders during a game.

There were also loud calls for the return of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, while Manchester United fans jokingly chanted for Jose Mourinho, who was sacked from both sides.

First-half goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba gave the visitors a solid lead as Chelsea once again struggled under Italian Sarri.

The former Napoli boss has come under increasing scrutiny for his apparent tactical inflexibility, having seen his side slip to fifth in the Premier League after a promising start.

The west London club have suffered three defeats from their last five league games and face an exit from the FA Cup.

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United: Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba score headers to send United through

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United: Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba score headers to send United through to FA Cup quarter-finals and increase the pressure on Maurizio Sarri

  • Manchester United through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup following 2-0 victory against Chelsea
  • Ander Herrera put Manchester United in front in 31st minute after excellent delivery from Paul Pogba
  • Pogba made it 2-0 to United just before the break with superb header following Marcus Rashford’s cross

The scoreline told the story: these are two clubs going in very different directions now.

Whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ends up a permanent fixture at Manchester United, he has done what he was employed to do in December. He has turned this ship around, United are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, the top four in the Premier League and on course to be in the Champions League next season.

They will do this, it seems, at the expense of Chelsea – a club that has lost its way under Maurizio Sarri, and that United deservedly dumped out of the FA Cup last night, just as they have evicted them from the Champions League places.

Chelsea will contend the Carabao Cup final with Manchester City on Sunday, but fans will travel in hope more than expectation, and not even much of that with City winning their most recent meeting 6-0. It was never going to be that against the red half of Manchester, but United were comfortable, two goals clear at half-time and contained Chelsea beyond that.

Victor Lindelof got a vital block in on a rare Eden Hazard shot and it may be argued that United’s Nemanja Matic was lucky not to receive a second yellow for some ferocious tackling in midfield, but these are minor quibbles.

United were better and appear to have been liberated by Solskajer as much as Chelsea seem shackled by Sarri. His second half substitutions – the inevitable Ross Barkley-Mateo Kovacic switch, plus full-back Davide Zappacosta for Cesar Azpilicueta – bought equal parts mockery and disdain, with Callum Hudson-Odoi again imprisoned on the bench.

‘You don’t know what you’re doing,’ sang the locals, but that’s just the problem. He does. It’s just that what he is doing is increasingly unsuccessful and maddeningly repetitive. The same moves, born of the same principles, repeated endlessly with diminishing returns.

Sarri did not even put N’Golo Kante, a defensive midfielder supreme, on Paul Pogba, despite seeing the Marquinhos effect when Paris St Germain came to Old Trafford last week. The upshot? A goal and an assist for the player who will run the game for Manchester United if he is allowed. And while it is precisely Solskjaer’s job to allow him, if Sarri the super-coach is to live up to his billing, how did he let this happen?

Legendary commentator John Motson in race rumpus after calling Millwall’s Tom Elliott ‘big, black and brave’ on air

  • Controversial comments were made during the coverage of FA Cup game
  • The 73-year-old commentator described the striker as ‘big, black and brave’
  • Sportsmail understands John Motson has been spoken to since the broadcast

Sami Mokbel for the Daily Mail

John Motson has been reprimanded by talkSPORT chiefs after describing Millwall striker Tom Elliott as ‘big, black and brave’ on air at the weekend.

The legendary commentator has been dragged into a race row after the controversial comments were made during the station’s coverage of Millwall’s 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Speaking pre-match when describing Elliott’s physical presence, the 73-year-old described the striker as ‘big, black and brave’ – an expression that has obvious racial connotations.

  • Began commentary career in 1971
  • For the BBC, covered 10 World Cup finals, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals, over 200 England internationals and more than 2,000 football matches.
  • Despite being reported as ‘retired’ after laving BBC, he joined talkSPORT in July 2018.

Sportsmail understands that Motson has been spoken to since the broadcast and reminded of his responsibilities. The broadcast has since been removed from talkSPORT’s website.

Motson is one of the most revered sports broadcasters of a generation but his comments on Saturday could cast a shadow over a legendary career.

A talkSPORT spokesman said: ‘We reviewed a live commentary by John Motson and decided to remove it from replay. TalkSPORT and all of its broadcasters take such matters very seriously and would never wish to offend.’

Rivière-Noire — Péninsule des Salines : la grande métamorphose

[ad_1]
