Liverpool (4-3-3)

Alisson Becker – Two crucial saves in the first half made amends for some unusually errant passing that could have been punished – 6

Trent Alexander-Arnold – Always a threat going forward but had his pocket picked once by Gnabry and it almost proved calamitous – 6.5

Joel Matip – Looked to be living on his nerves at times and came within a whisker of turning a cross past Alisson – 6

Fabinho – Much was made of his switch back but he slotted into central defence without too much fuss with some important interventions – 7

Andrew Robertson – Wayward header at one point put Fabinho under pressure and had a difficult time containing Gnabry – 7

Gini Wijnaldum – An intelligent player who is crucial to making his team tick; good battle with Martinez to gain the upper hand – 7

Jordan Henderson – The pick of Liverpool’s midfield, some terrific passes and the composure to offer constant protection to the back four – 7.5

Naby Keita – Growing into his role as a Liverpool player, looks more confident. Another step up and always looked to get forward – 7

Mohamed Salah – Just failed to get the right contact on a pass from Henderson; always involved and had Bayern permanently on edge – 6.5

Roberto Firmino – Never a real concern that he would miss the game but looked to be missing some sharpness in key moments – 6

Sadio Mane – Pick of the front three, wanted to run at Kimmich and Sule whenever he got the opportunity – 7

MANAGER

Jurgen Klopp – Had a moment when he implored the fans behind his dugout to calm down; his team played with discipline and restraint – 7

BAYERN MUNICH (4-3-3)

Manuel Neuer – It’s a wonder he ever concedes given his sheer size; always in the right place to control Bayern’s defence – 7

Joshua Kimmich – Booking for a rash tackle on Mane means he will miss the second leg and that could be huge loss for his team – 6

Niklas Sule – A huge presence in more ways than one, flung himself in front of Keita to charge down the Guinea midfielder’s shot – 7

Mats Hummels – Pace has never been his biggest forte but he is wily and never allowed himself to be isolated or exposed – 7

David Alaba – Regarded to be the world’s best left-back at one point and he oozed class throughout to keep Salah under a tight rein – 7

Javi Martinez – Brought into the team to offer protection to the back four and this Spanish World Cup winner did his job to the letter – 7

Thiago Alcantara – Makes up for what he lacks in defending with what he does on the ball; always managed to pass his way out of tight situations – 7

James Rodriguez – An enigmatic player; the ability is there but he simply does not influence this magnitude of game as regularly as he should – 6

Serge Gnabry – Real menace about his play in the first half when he whipped in a succession of crosses; Bayern’s main threat – 8

Robert Lewandowski – Questions have been asked about his form this season and he didn’t provide any real answers that he is back in the groove – 6

Kingsley Coman – Didn’t manage to have the same kind of impact as Gnabry but his pace and trickery kept Alexander-Arnold alert – 7

MANAGER

Niko Kovac – Game with a clear plan and this team of perennial winners never faltered from what he wanted them to do – 7

REFEREE

Paolo Valeri – They say you don’t notice the best referees and he was happily anonymous, allowing an intriguing game to run at it’s natural pace – 7

Sefton Council aiming to restrict ticket touts ahead of Grand National

  • Sefton Council want to eliminate touts at Aintree’s Grand National meeting
  • The proposals put forward include a Public Space Protection Order
  • Similar plans were implemented at Cheltenham Festival to prevent reselling

Marcus Townend for MailOnline

Sefton Council in Liverpool are looking to introduce moves to restrict ticket touts at the Grand National meeting at Aintree.

The move follows a similar action being implemented at Cheltenham racecourse where the Festival crowd in particular had become weary of being badgered by touts.

The Local Authority are proposing to introduce a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which would make it an offence within a designated area to sell, offer for sale or advertise tickets for the three day event.

Failing to comply with the order would result in ticket touts being required to leave the area for up to 24 hours and will be handed a £75 fixed penalty notice.

A consultation will now run until March 10 with residents being asked for their views on the proposed PSPO.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulation and Compliance, said: ‘Ticket touting at the Grand National is an ongoing issue and we want to curb this unpleasant practice.

‘Touts can be intimidating and their behaviour may cause distress to members of the public and racegoers during what should be a completely enjoyable experience.

‘We know through evidence provided to us that there has been a significant increase in the number of touts operating during the event over the last four years.”

Ward Councillors, Aintree Parish Council, The Jockey Club and local businesses will also be asked to give their views on the consultation.

Touts could now be subject to a Public Space Protection Order among other restrictions

PSG star Neymar reveals he spent ‘two days at home crying’ after latest injury

‘I spent two days at home crying’: PSG star Neymar reveals mental agony of breaking his metatarsal for second time as he continues road to recovery

  • Neymar has revealed he ‘cried for two days’ after his latest injury last month
  • The Brazilian suffered a repeat break of his metatarsal bone in his right foot
  • He said: ‘I wasn’t sad the first time… This time I had a tough time getting over it’
  • The PSG star is expected to be on the sidelines for at least another seven weeks

Jordan Seward For Mailonline

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has admitted he ‘cried for two days’ after re-breaking his metatarsal bone in his right foot last month.

Neymar is currently receiving further treatment on the problem and has been given a timescale of at least seven weeks, having sustained the injury in PSG’s French Cup win over Strasbourg in January.

The Brazilian’s World Cup participation last summer was almost jeopardised by the same injury but he has revealed this latest blow ‘is more complicated’ and has left a mental scar.

‘This time I had a tough time getting over it,’ the 27-year-old told Brazilian TV channel Globo.

‘I spent two days at home crying. The first time I hurt myself I said, “I’ll have an operation, it has to be fixed as quickly as possible”. I wasn’t sad.’

Neymar had tests on the injury in Barcelona last month and it was decided the problem would be dealt with by PSG’s medical staff as opposed to having another surgery.

The forward missed PSG’s first-leg win over Manchester United in the Champions League last week due to the injury and has also been ruled out of featuring in the return leg on March 6.

He is however hopeful of recovering in time to play in the quarter-final stage with PSG already having one foot in the next round after a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Dan Ashworth: ‘No conflict of interest’ as Brighton technical director

[ad_1]

Dan Ashworth believes there is ‘no conflict of interest at all’ after leaving his job at the FA to become technical director of Brighton

  • Dan Ashworth left his role at the FA and is now technical director at Brighton
  • He says there is no conflict of interest should he try and recruit English talent
  • He also says that manager Chris Hughton will have the final say on transfers

Ed Elliot, Press Association Sport

Former Football Association technical director Dan Ashworth insists there will be no conflict of interest should he try to recruit English talent for new club Brighton.

Ashworth has extensive knowledge of homegrown players at all age levels having spent more than six years with the FA.

The 47-year-old will be an integral part of future recruitment at the Amex Stadium after last week taking up his role as the Seagulls’ first technical director.

‘England were my employer and I did my best for England during those six years and never had a conflict of interest,’ said Ashworth.

‘It’s like (former England boss) Roy Hodgson leaving and becoming Crystal Palace manager – is he not supposed to sign any other English players? I don’t think there’s a conflict of interest at all.

‘If we do try and sign players, we go through the correct channels that we would do if I hadn’t have worked for England.

‘My job has changed focus now. It’s not just to do what’s best for English players, it’s now what’s best for Brighton.

‘If they’re English, then fantastic and nothing would give me more pleasure, but my job has changed to worldwide recruitment rather than English recruitment.’

Ashworth decided to quit his FA role after landing back from last summer’s World Cup in Russia.

With the next World Cup not until November and December 2022, he was keen for a return to the day-to-day duties of club football having previously worked at West Brom.

Despite departing the national team set-up for a team currently battling top-flight relegation, Ashworth dismissed suggestions his new job was a major step down.

‘I don’t view it like that at all,’ he said.

‘Any team that’s trying to stay or get in the Premier League is competing at a top level and a world level.

‘International football and club football is different – one’s not better or worse than the other, they’re just different.’

Ashworth was reportedly shortlisted as a potential candidate for a technical director role with Manchester United before it was announced in September that he had been appointed by Brighton.

However, he preferred to remain tight-lipped about the other opportunities he had considered.

‘I wouldn’t be prepared to discuss who I did or didn’t speak to,’ he said.

‘Over the last few years, I’d spoken to a couple of clubs and some were more interesting than others but Brighton was the most interesting role for me and it was a terrific opportunity.’

Dan Ashworth insists that manager Chris Hughton will always have the final say on transfers

Ashworth, who has known Albion boss Chris Hughton for a ‘number of years’, will be responsible for the club’s ongoing football development, as well as overseeing the academy and player recruitment at all levels.

Despite his remit, he insists Hughton will make the final decision on new signings.

‘My job is not to try and tell Chris what to do on the pitch or on the training pitch or from a tactical point of view. It’s to help and support him.

‘The manager has to have the final say on any player coming into the first team squad. If the manager doesn’t like, fancy, rate a player coming in then clearly the manager is not going to play them.’

While Ashworth was serving a six month notice period, Albion slipped into trouble at the wrong end of the table and sit three points above the drop zone having not won a top-flight game in 2019.

‘We’ve got a good squad and a good manager, so I’m confident we’ll still be a Premier League club next year,’ he added.
