Chelsea 3-0 Malmo – PLAYER RATINGS: Callum Hudson-Odoi makes most of rare chance to impress but Mateo Kovacic again fails to shine

Kieran Gill for the Daily Mail

Chelsea have got one foot in the next round of the Europe League after a comfortable second-leg victory over Malmo on Thursday night.

Olivier Giroud and Ross Barkley, as they did in Sweden last week, were on target again while Callum Hudson-Odoi added gloss to the scoreline six minutes before the end as Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners over the two legs.

Here, Sportsmail’s KIERAN GILL runs the rule over the performances of both sets of players.

CHELSEA (4-3-3)

Willy Caballero – 6

A few early scares. Otherwise a routine evening at Stamford Bridge for the stand-in goalkeeper.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6

Scruffy shot was saved to deny captain the opener after half hour. Put in hard yards, as per.

Antonio Rudiger – 6

The odd early nervy moment against the visitors wearing Manchester City Sky Blue. Soon calmed down and got his clean sheet.

Andreas Christensen – 6.5

Held his own but Sarri is still unlikely to start him in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against City.

Emerson – 6

Grew into the game. Got forward in the second half and showed good link-up play with Willian.

N’Golo Kante – 7.5

No Jorginho, but still used to the right of the midfield three. Direct run through the centre created opener. Does a job anywhere, doesn’t he?

Mateo Kovacic – 6

Yet to convince this season and, really, we’re still waiting to see what he can bring to the team. A rare 90 minutes for the midfielder.

Mateo Kovacic got a rare 90 minutes but again failed to put in a convincing performance

Ross Barkley – 7

Kovacic and Barkley starting together?! But how would Sarri sub one for the other?! Peach of a free-kick for 2-0.

Willian – 6

Dangerous balls into the box and skinned defenders well in first half. Set up opener in 55th minute.

Olivier Giroud – 6

The target man. Got his goal by getting on to the end of Willian’s low-driven cross. Woke the crowd up.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7.5

Rare chance to impress. Often the one trying to make things happen and well-taken goal for 3-0.

Hudson-Odoi was bright throughout and deservedly got his goal six minutes from the finish

MANAGER

Maurizio Sarri – 6.5

Chelsea’s head coach seemed nervous before kick-off, perhaps because he knew his job was on the line. Got result he required.

SUBS

Chelsea 3-0 Malmo (5-1 agg): Giroud, Barkley and Hudson-Odoi strike to punish 10-man visitors

0

[ad_1]

Walking wounded or dead man walking? This, increasingly, seems to be the only question facing Chelsea’s beleaguered manager Maurizio Sarri.

The 6-0 humiliation at Manchester City was a stress signal. The passive and meek acceptance of Monday evening’s defeat by Manchester United led to insurrection on the Stamford Bridge terraces.

On this occasion, Sarri could only be grateful that his opponents were the modest Malmo. Managed by the likeable Uwe Rosler, Malmo are a spirited team but they are still in the midst of their pre-season ahead of the start of the Swedish league season and, in any case, they were only the third best side in their domestic division last season.

Already ahead by a 2-1 scoreline from the first leg, this ought to have been routine fare for Chelsea. Yet in the seemingly final, desperate days of Sarri’s reign, nothing is routine. Nothing is to be taken for granted.

In the first half-hour of this match, Chelsea had less shots than their opponents and did not even earn a corner.

If they perform the same way early on against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s side will run up another tennis score.

Eventually, Chelsea did rouse themselves to break the deadlock through Olivier Giroud in the 55th minute. It was an important goal that diffused the tension after Chelsea supporters booed at the interval and then, in the quest for entertainment on another night of drudgery, one home fan decided to sprint across the pitch early in the second period.

Chelsea’s progress only seemed certain when Rasmus Bengtsson was dismissed in the 73rd minute for a second yellow card and Ross Barkley subsequently curled a sumptuous free-kick over the wall and in.

Even at 2-0, all was not well. When Jorginho arrived as a substitute, Chelsea groans dominated the airwaves once more. For a player short on confidence, it seemed counter-productive and rather unpleasant. It did, however, indicate that Chelsea followers will require more than this to forgive recent events.

Chelsea’s third goal, superbly dispatched by Callum Hudson-Odoi added gloss but also pose renewed questions of Sarri, who has utilised the teenager so rarely in recent times.

In many ways, this was always likely to be an awkward fixture for Sarri. Win the match handsomely and it is only Malmo. Muddle over the line and the questions continue.

Malmo were cheered on by a buoyant away following and the Swedes provided the soundtrack for much of the first game. As for the home crowd, there was a rousing round of applause when Chelsea players took their positions before kick-off. After the the toxicity of Monday evening, the olive branch was extended.

That was, at least, until the football began. Sarri was rapidly into the dugout, pacing with an urgency we might not expect from the manager of a team boasting a comfortable advantage against Swedish also-rans.

When Antonio Rudiger conceded a free-kick out wide early on, Sarri vented to his assistants in the dug-out. The Italian knows his side are helpless in defending crosses right now and his suspicions were confirmed as Bengtsson climbed highest but headed narrowly over.

Chelsea’s start was fraught and anxious. Sarri made seven changes from the defeat against United, as Jorginho, Eden Hazard and Gonzalo Higuain were rested. There was a start for Hudson-Odoi but the Italian’s stubbornness was underlined when he placed Mateo Kovacic at the heart of Chelsea’s three even in Jorginho’s absence.

As such, N’Golo Kante continued in his peculiar outside right role, stumbling into cul-de-sacs and rarely on hand to intervene in the areas where his team most requires his services.

This was underlined when Anders Christiansen raided away on the counter-attack, pursued by Kovacic and Ross Barkley, who picked up a booking. Kante was, however, the man who stepped up in the second period, providing forward thrust to shape the game against a tiring Malmo.

In the match day programme, Sarri said his side are not good enough in both penalty boxes. In short, they do not score enough goals and concede far too many and Sarri will know that this combination usually sees a manager sacked.

Chelsea should have been trailing inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour. Anxiety and carelessness pockmarked their play.

A routine foul was awarded against Cesar Azpilicueta and the Spaniard responded with fury rarely seen from the Chelsea captain. Kovacic then misplaced a square pass inside his own half but Marcus Antonsson lacked the quality to break beyond the Chelsea defend.

For Malmo, the half-chances came and went. Arnor Ingvi Traustason hit a snapshot wide. Hudson-Odoi and Kante went for the same ball inside their own half and the ball dropped to Markus Rosenberg, who turned Antonio Rudiger and fired an inch wide of the post. All the while, Sarri grew increasingly agitated.

Giroud headed over the top and Barkley tested the goalkeeper from distance a couple of times but Chelsea lacked incision, energy and desire. Inertia and hesitation defined their build-up. On the half-time whistle, it was little surprise when the jeers returned.

Malmo continued to threaten in the second-half, as two dangerous crosses flashed across goal before Kante decided to remind everyone of his enduring qualities. Yet short of endurance before their season begins, Malmo were not likely to keep up the tempo they set in their impressive first-half.

A loose header on the half-way line left the ball up for grabs in the centre-circle and Kante sprinted onto the scene, rampaging through midfield, leaving two opponents in his wake. He laid off to his left for Willian, who squared for Giroud to convert.

Another Kante burst freed Ross Barkley to slide in a cool finish but his celebrations were interrupted by an errant flag before the second and third came after Malmo were reduced to ten men.

Harry Kane is an ‘animal’, says Pochettino as he reveals star striker could return against Burnley

Harry Kane is an ‘animal’, says Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino as he reveals star striker could return against Burnley after recovering from ankle injury ahead of schedule

  • Harry Kane returned to Tottenham first-team training on Wednesday morning
  • The striker has recovered from ankle ligament injury way ahead of schedule
  • The damage to his ankle was expected to keep Kane out for at least two months
  • Kane is now in contention to play for Spurs away at Burnley this weekend

Riath Al-Samarrai for MailOnline

Mauricio Pochettino has described Harry Kane as an ‘animal’ on his return from injury but insisted he will not hesitate to keep him caged this weekend.

Kane has trained this week and is fit to face Burnley on Saturday after missing Tottenham’s past seven games with the ankle damage he sustained at Manchester United on January 13.

But his return to the squad will not be rubber-stamped until after Thursday’s training session and Pochettino said: ‘I don’t care if he feels ready or wants to play or not, like another player. I’ll decide with my coaching staff, with the doctor and the medical staff and sports science staff.

Mauricio Pochettino has described the forward as an ‘animal’ on his return from injury

‘Always with every player that came back from an injury or illness, it’s about the structure, when it’s possible to play or not. Of course if you asked him 10 days ago he would say he was ready to play. But in the end the last word is always myself. I take the risk, the decision and everything that is going on in the team.

‘But he’s good, he’s very good. I think we need to assess him in one more training session and then decide.

‘He’s not ahead of schedule but everyone knows that Harry is an animal, he wants to be ready as soon as possible. He did everything to try to recover and of course the injury that he suffered is tough to recover from but when you push, you push.

‘In some injuries, you cannot push too much, because you need to be careful. When it’s a massive injury it’s completely different. We’re so happy that in the last 10 days he was fantastic, back in training again, and he can be available again. It’s going to be a massive impact for everyone.’

Pochettino added: ‘For him he wants to play from the beginning of the match. I like when the player thinks like this, that they can play every single game and always feel fit to play. But it is our responsibility to always manage them in the best way.’

Pochettino also revealed Dele Alli could return to training late next week as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Alli has not featured since January 22 and was initially ruled out for six weeks.

Pochettino said: ‘His progression is good. We are happy. It is difficult to know when he can be involved. Maybe one week,10 days, two weeks. Now is going to be a key period, the last part of his recovery. We will assess him day by day.’

‘I want to be remembered as a legend of Liverpool’: Virgil van Dijk claims he wasn’t good enough to play centre back at 16… but now has his sights set on becoming an Anfield icon

  • Virgil van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence into the best in the top flight
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded only 15 goals in the Premier League this term
  • The imposing Dutchman has said he wants to be remembered as a Reds legend
  • He is the world’s most expensive defender after £75million move last year
  • But he revealed that he was not good enough to play as a centre back at 16

Peter Rutzler For Mailonline

Virgil van Dijk has revealed he wasn’t good enough to play as a centre back when he was 16 but is now determined to be ‘remembered as a legend’ at Anfield.

The imposing Dutch defender is now regarded among the best in the world in his position and that is reflected by Liverpool’s transformation since his arrival in January 2018.

The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League having conceded the fewest goals of any top-flight side, with Van Dijk considered a strong contender for Player of the Year.

But the centre back has his sights set on sitting alongside the likes of Alan Hansen, Jamie Carragher and Ron Yeats in the pantheon of Liverpool defensive greats.

VAN DIJK’S PREMIER LEAGUE STATS

Appearances: 26

Goals: 1

Wins/losses: 20/1

Clean sheets: 13

Tackle success: 74 per cent

Recoveries: 127

Aerial battles won: 110

Clearances: 133

When asked how he wanted to be remembered at Anfield, Van Dijk told BBC Radio Five Live: ‘As a legend of Liverpool.

‘I want to achieve amazing things here. We have a fantastic squad, we have everything, we have all the tools.

‘They went all out to get me and I want to give everything for them. Before I started training [(with the club), I went to the game against Leicester (in December 2017). I was in the boardroom and met so many legends, great players who played for a beautiful club.

‘When you play for this club, you’ll always be welcome as you’ve been part of the family. It’s one of the reasons I definitely wanted to play for the club.’

Helping to end Liverpool’s 29-year wait for a top-flight title would certainly help to cement his legacy at Anfield.

The 6ft 4in centre back was a long-term target for the club and became the world’s most expensive defender when he signed from Southampton for an eye-watering £75million.

He has proved to be worth every penny, but according to the Holland international, he was not always good enough to play as a centre half.

During his youth days at Willem II, the 16-year-old Van Dijk was pushed out wide to right back – until a summer growth spurt.

He added: ‘I wasn’t tall until I had a growth spurt – at 16 my younger brother was getting taller than me. Over the summer I turned 17, I grew 18 centimetres.

‘My knee was a bit unstable. I had groin problems. I had so many problems, then I had proper rehab with physios and was out for six weeks. After that, I started playing well.

‘At 16, I was a slow right back and wasn’t good enough to play centre back. I was never a standout player until I played for the Under 19s and became the captain.’
