Sky Bet EFL Q&A: Sunderland’s Will Grigg on his goal against Man City

[ad_1]

Have goals, will travel. Or in the case of Sunderland’s new £4million striker Will Grigg, have goals and a song.

The 27-year-old has become synonymous with the ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ song that was posted online by a supporter of Wigan Athletic, his former club.

The tune earned the Wigan fan a free season ticket and Grigg’s fame across Europe when the Northern Ireland fans saluted their squad member around France during Euro ’16.

Grigg still finds it delightfully surreal, although with 120 career club goals for Walsall, Brentford, MK Dons, Wigan and now Sunderland to his name, he has lived up to the lyrics more often than not.

The subject of this week’s Sky Bet EFL Q&A, the Northern Ireland international also recalls the night his goal caused one of the great modern-day FA Cup shocks a year ago this week and reveals an unusual choice of pre-match music.

Describe yourself on the pitch in 3 words.

Poacher. Unselfish. Clever.

Describe yourself off the pitch in 3 words.

Family man. Professional. Humble.

Best moment of your career so far?

I’ve had four promotions so they are as special as each other, but as a single moment it would be the win against Man City in the FA Cup (Wigan’s 1-0 win in the fifth round in February 2018).

It was a special moment and a special day, especially how Man City were playing at the time. They were the best team in the country, probably the best team in the world at the time. It was also the nature of how it happened and it was in the FA Cup.

Getting the goal as well makes it that extra bit special. It was one of the two or three times that I actually touched the ball in the whole game, but to see the stadium like that and to be able to share the experience as well with my family was very special.

Even though we beat them, you would still want one of their shirts. You still respect them. They are special players and they are playing at that level for a reason. It’s not just that game, it’s what that person has done throughout their whole career.

Grigg scored the only goal as Wigan knocked Manchester City out of the FA Cup last season

When you beat them it’s nice, but to get a shirt would always have that memory with it. You would be able to show off the win as well. Having said that, I didn’t get a Man City shirt that day. I tried to get Aguero’s, but didn’t manage it.

The first time I heard ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ in the stadium was good as well. It was a bit strange how it came around. There was a Wigan fan, Sean Kennedy, who did a few videos with certain players and certain songs. Mine seemed to catch on and went viral.

It was a during a free-scoring period for myself when I was scoring goals left, right and centre. It started off with a section of the crowd at the DW Stadium and then before you know it, it’s the whole stadium and then it’s at the Euros. It was a very, very surreal moment, but it’s something that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Who is the hardest opponent you have faced?

It would be from that Man City game. Aymeric Laporte and John Stones were the two centre-halves, but I thought that Laporte was something special – the way he handled the ball and the way he defended as well.

He put a lot of pressure on me. Even though City had a lot of possession, he made it very difficult for myself. And the way he played on the ball and manipulated it was something I hadn’t quite seen before.

He differed from a Championship defender or a League One defender in the sense that he was a lot cleverer in terms of his positioning. He read the game really well.

Obviously there were a lot of clearances from the Wigan players and balls that I would usually have been able to get to and hold up.

Just the way he positioned himself and read the game was what gave him that extra yard and what made it extra difficult for me.

Most embarrassing moment in football?

I haven’t had that many but in my first home game for Sunderland against Blackpool this month, I took the ball around the keeper and then managed to miss from eight yards out with an empty goal waiting.

That was pretty embarrassing because it was my first home game and because the club had paid a big fee for me. That certainly added to the scenario.

I’ve scored enough goals and missed enough chances to be able to bounce back from something like that, but at the time it was pretty embarrassing because you don’t want the Sunderland fans to think that’s what you’re like.

Which song gets you in the mood for a match?

I’m a bit weird actually. Most people like to listen to dance music to get them in the mood and ready for a game.

Obviously everybody listens to the same music in the changing room but if I’m driving to the game, I’ll listen to a bit of Hans Zimmer or instrumental stuff. It’s not really a cool list or probably what you were expecting, but then my music selection isn’t.

Hans Zimmer writes film scores. He did the Batman soundtrack, ‘Inception’, ‘Gladiator’ and stuff like that (also the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ scores).

It just gets me head-strong. I like to think I’m quite calm and collected on the pitch and that gets me in the zone. I don’t like to be too stressed out or thinking about too many things before a game.

I like to get in the same mind frame each game, concentrate on my job, concentrate on what I need to do in the game. That music relaxes me and enables me to concentrate.

What’s your guilty food pleasure?

It sounds boring but I do like a Nando’s. And I’ll probably go for a few Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I’ll probably buy a share box, I think it’s a shared dozen, but I wouldn’t really share it with anyone.

But I look after myself and I’m pretty professional, so that’s definitely once in a while.

Which player in history would you like to play alongside – and why?

Zinedine Zidane. As I was growing up, he was always the player that I’d watch and just think he was unbelievable. He was always someone I’ve looked up to.

I know we play different positions, but in the way he played, his control and his calmness on the ball was something I’ve never seen, not to this day.

If I made a run, he would certainly find me with the ball.

Which famous manager would you have loved to play for – and why?

It’s probably a common one, but Sir Alex Ferguson because of the teams he had and the success he had. I’d just like to experience – I wouldn’t personally like to experience it obviously – his half-time or full-time screaming and shouting. I’d like to witness that. Probably not more than once but I’d like to see it.

And just the way he managed to motivate his players week in, week out. And not just week in, week out, but season in, season out. To continually do that at one of the biggest clubs in the world is just unbelievable. He must have been very special.

What would you be if you weren’t a footballer?

I would definitely have stayed somewhere in the sports science field. Before I turned professional (with Walsall), I was actually doing a college course that was basically half football, half sports science, so I would have gone into sports science.

I’m not sure whether I would have ended going down the physio route or the strength and conditioning route, but I would have definitely stayed along sport lines and at some point have chosen the football path. I would have always liked to have been behind the scenes.

I can imagine myself still doing that after my career. It’s obviously something I’ll have to start thinking about, something that I’ll definitely consider and ask advice about. There are a lot of people who have been there and done it in the game so when it comes around to it, that might be an avenue open to me.

Tell us a secret that fans won’t know…

When I was growing up, I had two goldfish called Del Piero and Ronaldo (the Brazil Ronaldo). I was quite young so it seemed acceptable. None of my friends knew, but they will now, so thanks for that.

At one point, Del Piero had to go to a special goldfish farm, so we got a new one called Ollie. That wasn’t really on theme and I’m not sure who decided on that name.

Bernardo Silva calls for Manchester City to keep winning trophies as they prepare to take on Chelsea

‘We will do our best’: Bernardo Silva calls for Manchester City to keep winning trophies as they prepare to take on Chelsea in Carabao Cup final

  • Bernardo Silva has called for Manchester City to keep winning trophies regularly
  • City face Chelsea on Sunday as they look to retain the Carabao Cup
  • Silva believes Chelsea will be a different team from the one City beat 6-0

Andy Hampson, Press Association Sport

Bernardo Silva wants Manchester City to develop the habit of defending trophies year after year.

City are bidding to retain the Carabao Cup as they face Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday, a feat they have never previously achieved in any competition.

City are also hoping to win successive Premier League crowns and, with the Champions League and FA Cup in their sights, too, there could be more opportunities to go back to back next season.

‘That is one of our main goals – not only winning it once but to keep winning and winning,’ said Silva, looking ahead to this weekend’s showpiece event.

‘We know we have the squad to do that but our opponents are very strong and it won’t be an easy job. We will do our best to try.’

Silva is wary of the threat posed by Chelsea despite being part of the side that thrashed the Londoners 6-0 when they met at the Etihad Stadium less than a fortnight ago.

The Portugal midfielder says that result will count for little at Wembley.

The 24-year-old said: ‘To be honest we should forget that match because it won’t happen again. We are not expecting the same result.

‘We are playing against one of the best sides in the world, even though lately their results are not the best for them.

BERNARDO SILVA’S RECORD THIS SEASON

Premier League: 26 games, five goals, six assists

Champions League: Six games, two goals

FA Cup: One game, one goal

Carabao Cup: One game

Community Shield: One game

Total: 35 games, eight goals, seven assists

‘Against those kinds of players you can never relax, and if you give them time to think, time to play and time to decide they will destroy you. So, we have to play with the same intensity and try to win another trophy.’

City were given a reminder on Wednesday of how difficult opponents at the elite level can be.

Pep Guardiola’s men needed late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win over Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Germany.

Silva said: ‘I think we know how good the teams are in the Champions League.

‘When you play Champions League you know you are playing against the best teams, the best players and the best crowds, so we were not expecting an easy game and that’s what happened.

‘We were very happy with the result and now we want to finish the job and go through to the quarter-finals.’

Arsenal and Chelsea move one step closer in their bid to lift the Europa League trophy.

The Gunners came in guns blazing to overturn the first leg deficit against BATE to make the aggregate 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.

Maurzio Sarri’s side won both legs of their clash against Malmo with a strong second-half performance in the second leg which saw Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi score at Stamford Bridge.

  • Inter Milan (ITA)
  • Villarreal (ESP)
  • Valencia (ESP)
  • Eintracht Frankfurt (GER)
  • Red Bull Salzburg (AUT)
  • Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)

Who can Chelsea and Arsenal face?

With no seedings or country protection it’s possible for Arsenal and Chelsea to clash in the round of 16.

However, there are fourteen other European clubs they can also face at this stage of the tournament.

Best case scenario

Chelsea:

Blues would be confident facing Benfica having won against the Portuguese side in all three of their encounters in the Champions League.

Arsenal:

The Gunners would be lucky to get Villarreal who are presently 18th in La Liga and have failed to win against the North London side previously on four occasions (2 wins 2 draws).

Worst case scenario

London sides clashing would most likely be the worst case scenario at this stage of the tournament. Firstly it means no European trip for fans and secondly it means hopes of an English side winning the Europa League are pinned on one team.

The biggest threat to both sides would come from Napoli who entered the Europa League tournament after being knocked out in the Champions League group stage. The Italian side are currently second to Serie A leaders Juventus and secured a dominant win in both Europa League last 32 legs against Zurich.

Other teams Arsenal and Chelsea will want to avoid are Sevilla, Inter Milan and Valencia.

Shortest and longest trip for Arsenal and Chelsea

The shortest and probably most disappointing trip for Arsenal and Chelsea fans is a head-to-head clash which would see them travel a measly 8.2 miles.

Whereas the longest journey would see London sides travel an impressive 1829 miles by plane to face Russian side Krasnodar.

Here are air miles to each destination for London clubs:

  • London (Emirates Stadium to Stamford Bridge) – 8.2 miles
  • Rennes (FRA) – 244 miles
  • Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) – 396 miles
  • Inter Milan (ITA) – 596 miles
  • Red Bull Salzburg (AUT) – 638 miles
  • Slavia Prague (CZE) – 645 miles

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri jokingly dismisses talk he met Roma chiefs over manager’s role

‘I read something about a dinner with Franco Baldini, but I think he’s in South Africa… so it’s very difficult to have dinner with him!’: Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri jokingly dismisses talk he met Roma chiefs over manager role

Maurizio Sarri laughed off suggestions he met Roma bosses in London to discuss their manager’s job, with the Italian insisting he has a contract to honour with Chelsea.

Sarri is under increasing pressure at Stamford Bridge after a string of humiliating defeats by Bournemouth, Arsenal and Manchester City in recent weeks. He did, at least, see his side secure progression to the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday.

Fans appeared to turn on him during a disappointing FA Cup fifth-round defeat by Manchester United on Monday night but Sarri was bullish when quizzed on reports in the Italian media that he is close to a return to his home country.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: ‘Of course no. I have a contract with Chelsea for the next season so it is impossible to have other contact.

‘I read in an Italian newspaper that I had dinner with Franco Baldini but I think Franco at the moment is in South Africa to meet with him!’

The interviewer suggested he could have discussed with Baldini over Facetime or Skype, a suggestion that brought a rare smile out of Sarri.

His future at Chelsea remains unclear and reports on Thursday soon emerged suggesting Roma had moved quickly to try and install him as manager for next season.

Baldini and president James Pallotta had dinner with Sarri in London, according to Italian publication La Reppublica.

The Italian newspaper explained that current boss Eusebio Di Francesco is ‘very likely’ to leave at the end of the season, with sporting director Monchi’s future uncertain.

Sarri, who came close to delivering the Serie A title to Napoli last season, would be Roma’s ‘first choice’ according to the report.

Roma are fifth in Serie A after 24 games played and face Frosinone on Saturday.

Sportsmail reported this week that Sarri is is facing a virtually impossible task to save his job.

Having overseen a 5-1 aggregate win over Malmo to reach the last 16 of the Europa League, his players now turn attention to facing Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

They the Blues face Tottenham in the Premier League next Wednesday. Defeat in either of those games could result in Sarri being fired.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger admitted the squad is low on confidence and described life under Sarri as a return to the classroom.

The 25-year-old German said: ‘Fatigue, no, because it’s not like we are doing box-to-box runs. It’s not physical. It’s the tactical things he likes to do. That’s his way, he’s carrying on. It’s new for the majority of the players but we have to adapt to it.

‘It’s the same if you sit in the school the whole time listening to someone. Of course, sometimes, it gets mental, but at the end of the day you have to do your job.’

Sarri remained bullish on Wednesday ahead of hosting Malmo on Thursday night, saying: ‘I have to think that I will be the manager of Chelsea for a long time, otherwise I cannot work.

‘I am not sure (it will work), but I have to think this. I have to work, and I want to work with a long-term target.’

Véronique Topize concède : « Dan mo latet, mo ti pe konpran kinn arive, me mo ti refiz asksepte sa.
Personne ne pouvait me répondre !

Me relever et faire face. Ek tou mo koler ek mo soufrans, denn fam kinn perdi so mari, ki pa konn laverite ».

Neymar took to social media to launch his new signature Mercurial Vapor 360 boots as the Brazilian ace continues his recovery from injury.

The PSG star injured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during the French champions Coupe de France clash with Strasbourg last month and was ruled out for around seven weeks.

Neymar, who has received treatment in Paris and Barcelona, headed back to Brazil on Thursday for a 10-day trip under supervision of PSG’s medical department.

While he rested up on the flight, Neymar, wearing his own brand white cap, took the chance to spend the hours in the air wisely, showing off the designs of his latest boots.

With a finger to his lips, the boots, nicknamed ‘Silencio’, are said to reference ‘his ability to turn the sound off and focus on the ball’, according to Nike’s website.

The boots feature a striking red Nike logo while the basis for the design is a blend of white and black. They will retail at £229.95 in the UK.

On Wednesday, Neymar cut a solemn figure at Barcelona airport after visiting his former side’s club doctor. The striker was seen wearing dark sunglasses and a vintage tracksuit as he hobbled along.

He made the trip for consultation and treatment from Ramon Cugat and was pictured still using crutches for the broken metatarsal in his right foot.

Cugat is a renowned Spanish surgeon, specialising in orthopedic surgery, orthopaedic sports medicine and arthroscopy and evidently has the trust of Neymar.

The Brazilian admitted crying for two days after re-breaking the bone and is still set to be sidelined for another seven weeks.

RAFA UNCOVERED: Benitez reveals his love of Clint Eastwood films, Bruce Lee and solitaire

0

[ad_1]

Rafa Benitez springs to his feet, grabs an unsuspecting member of our group and demonstrates how he would finish a judo match — one hand gripping the collar, his forearm to the throat.

‘I can fight if I have to fight… I am ready,’ says the Newcastle United manager, taking a welcome break from talk of his future for a rare delve into his past.

‘When I was a boy I loved Bruce Lee. I did judo aged six to 13. I got a brown belt but had to give up to join Real Madrid‘s academy. Three years later my brother did the black belt exam, so I did too. You had to win three of five fights. But they killed me, because I no longer had the power in my arms.’

Benitez, laughing, mimics the build of his first opponent, arms outstretched, cheeks puffed, a shape akin to a sumo wrestler.

But there is, you feel, frustration that he never achieved the ultimate rank. The tutorial continues, despite him wearing a brace on his right wrist. He takes hold of the bemused participant. ‘My moves now are not as good as they once were,’ he says, yet he still looks competent enough to worry those players who wander by this impromptu display.

‘But the main thing in judo is the strength here (forearm). You have to hold the opponent all of the time. So, if you don’t practise the first fight is fine, but after three or four you have no power left, especially on the floor.’

Perhaps the message is this: Benitez has one good scrap left in him. Mike Ashley beware. But here on the Costa Blanca, beneath the sun and amid the relaxed surrounds of the team’s mid-season retreat, we agree that talk of the owner is best left behind on Tyneside. It is a relief for everyone.

Benitez’s future is yet to be determined. He will sign a new contract if Ashley agrees to match his ambition. He wants more than an existence of survival, for the Spaniard is a fierce and obsessive competitor. Just ask his wife Maria.

He points to the brace. ‘I’ve had this (repetitive strain injury) six months. It’s not just that I’m always working hard on the phone and computer… I’ve also been on the phone competing against my wife.

She was playing solitaire, I wanted to beat her. She was doing very well and showed me her score. I asked, “What is the record?” I spent one month on that game! But believe me, I beat the record. It’s not easy but I beat it.’

Benitez now has his phone in his grasp. The judo dummy is allowed to sit down. He is talking about his daughters Claudia, 20, and Agata, 16, and their influence on him.

‘Here’s a message from my daughter, one hour ago, telling me about Instagram, saying, “Listen, you don’t have a clue. Put this and you’ll get more followers”. For me, I don’t need more followers, but for her it seems important!

‘We talk about Ant and Dec and she says, “Oh, they’re big Newcastle fans and talk well about you, you need to follow them”. So Ant and Dec were easy, Alan Shearer too!

‘But she told me, “James Bay is a famous singer but also a massive Newcastle fan and says nice things about you, follow him”. So I did.’ Does Benitez always do as his girls say?

‘In the past we had the big television in the lounge with the football on, we’d fight over what to watch. But not any more, I can’t win. When one of them is watching the Geordie Shore, I say, “What are you doing?”. They love Big Brother, Love Island, all that rubbish. But they always win!’

Benitez the football manager, at 58, sees the value in being around his daughters at their home on the Wirral. ‘The way you talk with your daughter, you know how she’s thinking, it’s very useful. Players are like teenagers, many of them. You have to think, “What would I say to my daughters in this situation?” It really works. So it can be similar, managing daughters and footballers!’

What about their boyfriends? ‘I criticise one of them, he’s learning Spanish at school but he can’t say much. I tell him, “Come on!”,’ says Benitez, gesturing to clip the lad around the ear. ‘But they’re fine. They know that at home I’m just normal.’

On occasion, the father-daughter chat turns to football. ‘The little one, she’s a real Scouser, she gives me advice about tactics. In the Asterix and Obelix cartoons, the Roman soldiers use the tortoise formation, with shields covering the front, sides and top.

‘She tells me we should do the same, with the ball in the middle, going forward and then attacking.’

Given Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal this season, she may be on to something.

‘But they like football, they follow all my games. They only worry about me when we are losing… “Dad, be careful!” I was unwell (in 2017) and was at home, on the sofa, “Get me this, get me that”. But they know I can cope with the pressure.’

So what does Benitez do to ease the stresses? They are, after all, plentiful at Newcastle. ‘I watch any cowboy film. You have that channel, TMC, with Clint Eastwood, I like him. A lot of spaghetti Westerns were filmed here in Spain but they are not so good… you can see the Indians still wearing their wristwatches!’ Benitez’s backroom staff say he pauses films to highlight such errors, his attention to detail extending beyond the football pitch.

Another clue to escapism comes from his phone’s screensaver, a picture of a dog. ‘To be fair, it’s three dogs, I can only fit one on.’ Perhaps his daughters can talk him through his phone’s picture cropping tools.

‘My dogs are Red, the German shepherd, Goofy, a springer spaniel, and Clem, the labrador. Goofy is my wife’s dog, he’s the boss.’

Does he ever consult his canine comrades on tactics? ‘I try in both Spanish and English but they don’t understand me,’ he says, smiling. But talk of dogs leads Benitez to reveal a life’s passion. It comes as no surprise to learn he even trained them for competitions.

‘I had a dobermann, he was very good. I was in my twenties and when I was training, I’d be running with him. He was very fast and very strong, but I lived on the fourth floor so I’d take him out for a pee and he’d be pulling me down the stairs!’

Benitez’s brother, sister and two uncles are vets, but it was never a career for him. For while he has spent the past half-hour sharing a warm insight into Benitez the man, husband and father, it always comes back to football.

This time, though, he is talking about his playing career, a subject rarely visited. Sometimes that bothers him.

‘People say, “You were never playing football”, but I was playing football all my life,’ he says, before detailing his career, from Real Madrid’s youth and reserve teams to second-tier Linares and retirement at 26 because of a knee injury. He made 158 league appearances and scored 17 goals.

‘I played as holding midfielder but my best position was sweeper. I could see the game and could talk. I was not the quickest but I had the vision.’

Benitez combined playing with a degree in physical education and represented Spain at the World Student Games in Mexico City in 1979. He is back on his feet as if he’s addressing a dead-ball. He takes a few steps back.

‘I scored a penalty against Cuba. The keeper was telling me, ‘Defender, I will stop the goal’, but… boom! But the best goal I ever scored was disallowed — outside the box, outside of my boot, top corner, then it was ruled out for offside!’

Earlier in the day we watched Benitez lead training, including a fine header of his own. He admits that he misses playing, but management was always his destiny.

Benitez returned to Real Madrid to coach their youth teams and begin his life as a manager

Benitez returned to Real Madrid to coach their youth teams and begin his life as a manager

‘Aged 13, I made notes of my team-mates, giving them marks, noting all the top scorers. At university I was player-coach. I was always football, football, football.’ He describes a daily schedule that involved classes followed by a mad dash for the underground and a sprint to Real Madrid’s training ground for the evening session.

‘At least my warm-up was done by the time I got there!’ He returned to Real after retirement in 1986, coaching their youth teams to league and cup success. He eventually assisted the senior side before an offer from Real Valladolid in 1995.

And so began the life of Benitez the manager, a journey that has taken him to the very top but is now at a crossroads. What a travesty it would be for Newcastle were he allowed to head in a different direction.

As he leaves for lunch, Benitez spins. ‘Be careful what you write…’

Thinking back to the judo demonstration, you know the consequences.

His future at Newcastle is still up in the air but he will stay if the owner matches his ambition
