Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri: An hour enough to prepare for Man City

‘We’ll prepare the match in 60 minutes, no more’: Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri to drill his side for just one hour ahead of Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley

  • Chelsea face Manchester City at Wembley in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final
  • In-form City thrashed Chelsea 6-0 in the Premier League earlier this month
  • Sarri does not want to fog his players’ minds with memories of that humiliation
  • So he will spend just one hour on Saturday to prepare his team to take on City

Kieran Gill for the Daily Mail

Maurizio Sarri will spend only one hour preparing his players to face Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley, despite his job potentially resting on the result.

The Chelsea boss does not want to bombard his squad with information or fog their minds with memories of their 6-0 humiliation by City two weeks ago. It comes after Antonio Rudiger’s comments likening Sarri to a head teacher constantly talking to the squad.

On Thursday Chelsea beat Malmo 3-0 to reach the Europa League last 16, where they face Dynamo Kiev, though the first half hour left Sarri concerned for his side’s mentality.

‘In this match, for 30 minutes, I saw a team very worried,’ Sarri said afterwards. ‘Without confidence. So I don’t want to press them.

‘We will prepare for the match only on Saturday. I want to see something more free, so we’ll prepare the match in 60 minutes, no more.’

Sarri faces the sack if his team are embarrassed again on Sunday, and Chelsea have England assistant Steve Holland on a list of potential candidates to take over for the rest of the season. FA insiders, though, insist no approach has been made for Gareth Southgate’s No 2.

Sarri believes it is unfair that he is deemed to be in a crisis compared to Arsenal under Unai Emery. The Gunners sit a place above Chelsea in fifth but only due to a higher goals tally, with both teams on 50 points and a plus-16 goal difference.

‘We’re one point from the top four, the same points as Arsenal,’ he said.

‘People say Arsenal are doing well, so we are doing a little bit better because we’re in a final. And yet our season is a disaster. I don’t understand.’

Dustin Johnson holds two-shot lead over Rory McIlroy ahead of third round of WGC Mexico Championship

  • Dustin Johnson now leads WGC Mexico Championship going into third round
  • Rory McIlroy did lead but is now two shots behind and level with Matt Kuchar
  • Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood are further two shots back on leaderboard

Press Association Sport Staff

Dustin Johnson will take a two-shot lead over Rory McIlroy into the third round of the WGC Mexico Championship.

McIlroy, who has won just one PGA Tour title since 2016, topped the leaderboard after an opening-round 63 but could only follow that up with a 70.

The Northern Irishman made a storming start to his second round, birdieing three of the first four holes, but was back to level for the day after a double bogey at the ninth and only managed one birdie on the back nine.

Dustin Johnson -11

Rory McIlroy, Matt Kuchar -9

Tommy Fleetwood, Sergio Garcia -7

Johnson was the man to take advantage with a round of 67, posting four birdies and not dropping a shot as he moved to 11 under par.

McIlroy was joined on nine under by Matt Kuchar, who is letting his golf do the talking after last week’s caddie controversy and birdied the first four holes in a round of 67.

Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood are a further two shots back on seven under, two ahead of Tiger Woods, who is among a group of players on five under.

The former world number one hit arguably the shot of the day on the 18th when he played out of a fairway bunker to a matter of feet and holed the birdie to finish with a round of 66.

England collapse as Cottrell takes five wickets to haul Windies level

England collapse as Sheldon Cottrell takes five wickets to haul West Indies level in one-day series

  • West Indies beat England by 26 runs to move all square in the five-game series
  • England lost their last six wickets for just 35 runs, having looked on course to win
  • Ben Stokes registered his highest ODI score against the West Indies
  • But Sheldon Cottrell took five wickets as hosts turned on the style in Barbados

Paul Newman for the Daily Mail

Just as West Indies shocked England in the first Test in Barbados they did it again here on Friday to bring this one-day series alive.

The World Cup favourites were humbled by a side who only just crept into this summer’s tournament through a qualifying tournament as West Indies thrillingly won the second 50-over international by 26 runs to level this five-match series.

And at the centre of it, just as he was in the first Test, was the impressive figure of West Indies captain Jason Holder who took three key English wickets just as they appeared to be cruising towards what should have been a comfortable target.

Fittingly, it was Holder who was also under the catch that clinched the match when Liam Plunkett holed out off Carlos Brathwaite to set off wild celebrations from a refreshingly large West Indian contingent in the Kensington Oval crowd.

There had earlier been another glimpse of what could be a golden future for West Indies in the form of a quite brilliant century from the gifted Shimron Hetmyer to take them somewhere close to par on a trickier Barbados pitch.

Then there was the animated figure of Sheldon Cottrell, a late replacement in this squad, who got his side off to the perfect start to England’s reply when he dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck and then forced Jason Roy to chop on.

Both were celebrated with Cottrell’s trademark Marlon Samuels style salute as later were the significant wickets of Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali for the left-armer as West Indies closed in on a significant victory.

Morgan had seemingly been leading England home but once he had gone and Holder had followed that with his three-wicket burst West Indies, ranked ninth in the world to England’s first, were homing in on a surprise to match that series defining victory here in the first Test.

Ben Stokes equalled his highest international score since that infamous night in Bristol when he made 79 before Holder had him caught behind and saw him waste England’s review in the process.

It was to prove important as Holder, who then saw the back of Jos Buttler, was the beneficiary of an absolutely shocking lbw decision from West Indian umpire Gregory Brathwaite to see off Tom Curran first ball as England started rocking.

It had been Chris Gayle’s hit it or block it tactics that were the feature of the first game here won by England when they completed a record chase with the minimum of fuss.

But this was a proper display of modern white-ball batting from the 23-year-old Guyanese Hetmyer who made an unbeaten 104 in West Indies 289 for six to register his fourth one-day international century in only his 22nd game.

England were without their best white-ball bowler in the rested Chris Woakes, whose knee injury remains a concern in World Cup year, but they were more penetrative with the ball and quite brilliant in pulling off two outstanding run outs.

It was Mark Wood who excelled in Woakes absence by coming close to the speeds that saw him reach 95 miles per hour in the St Lucia Test and conceded just 38 runs in his 10 overs here while taking the wicket of Carlos Brathwaite.

And it was Rashid, who had earlier bowled Gayle for 50 off 63 balls with a beauty, and Jason Roy who pulled off the direct hit run outs that were reward for all the extensive work England put in to their fielding.

It seemed as though their fielding had earned England a chase well within their capabilities but the curse of Kensington struck again and they travel to Grenada now for the next two matches desperate to avoid a repeat of west Indies shock Test series win.

ECB chairman Colin Graves, meanwhile, was forced into an embarrassing climbdown over his attempt to stop England’s biggest county in Surrey from staging matches in next summer’s Hundred competition.

Even though Graves contacted county chairmen in an attempt to drum up support for his plan, his attempt to switch Hundred matches from one of the eight stated venues to the far less suitable Chelmsford or Bristol has been dashed by the ECB board.

Zinedine Zidane ‘won’t be put off by Chelsea transfer ban’ and will be given £200m to spend at Stamford Bridge

  • Chelsea are considering bringing in Zinedine Zidane to replace Maurizio Sarri
  • Sarri’s job is under threat after poor results and reportedly met Roma for talks
  • Chelsea have been hit with a two-year transfer ban but Zidane still wants job
  • Should he take over at Stamford Bridge he will have £200m to spend on players

James Ayles For Mailonline

Zinedine Zidane is still interested in taking over as manager of Chelsea despite the club’s two-year transfer ban, according to The Sun.

The Stamford Bridge side were hit with the suspension over illegally signing 29 young players, but may appeal in order to have the upcoming summer transfer window to recruit fresh faces.

With current boss Maurizio Sarri under pressure after a run of poor form, Zidane still wants the job and will be given a huge £200m for signings.

The incumbent Italian enjoyed a fine start to life in west London, but has overseen an alarming dip in form that sees Chelsea sit sixth in the Premier League, one point from the Champions League places.

Despite only joining from Napoli in the summer, his long-term future remains unclear amid interest from Roma in making him their boss at the end of the current season.

Zidane has been unemployed since leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season, having led the club to a third consecutive Champions League win.

The Frenchman’s former club Juventus are also considering an offer for him to reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he enjoyed so much success in Spain.

The probe from FIFA analysed more than 100 transfers carried out by the club, with Chelsea also fined £460,000 and given three months to address the issues highlighted.

FIFA also handed a £390,000 fine to the Football Associan for failing to police the recruitment of young players at a club under their jurisdiction.

How Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revolutionised Manchester United

0

[ad_1]

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his way at Old Trafford, Liverpool will discover just how far Manchester United have come since these two bitter enemies last met in December.

It has been quite a transformation. From the defeat at Anfield that saw the axe fall on Jose Mourinho to the remarkable resurgence under Solskjaer.

As one United insider told Sportsmail: ‘It feels like someone has drawn back the curtains and let the sunshine in.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (centre) has had a huge impact since taking over at Manchester United

The enduring image of Mourinho’s last game is Paul Pogba sat on the bench at Anfield, an unused substitute as a United team devoid of ambition sank to a 3-1 defeat against their biggest rivals.

‘I’m done after this,’ Mourinho confided to friends in a text message as he slipped away that night. ‘But I’m not quitting.’ He was right on both counts.

His employers had grown tired of the negativity. They never envisaged, though, just how quickly the man installed as caretaker would turn things around. Approaching the 20th anniversary of his famous winner in the Champions League final, Solskjaer is performing another miracle.

United have their mojo back and there has been improvement throughout the team. Pogba looks like a world beater, Marcus Rashford a man possessed. Victor Lindelof, written off as a £30million misfit, has become the bedrock of United’s defence.

It is hard to imagine any coach having such an effect on an English club, certainly one the size of United.

No sooner had the black clouds of Mourinho’s acid reign blown away than Solskjaer breezed back into Old Trafford in December to bestow bars of his favourite Norwegian chocolate on the female members of staff at Carrington — as he always did during his 14-year career as a player and reserve team manager — and goodwill on the rest of the club.

On his first day back, he accepted an invitation to the staff Christmas party. Typically, Solskjaer turned up in a club suit but had to borrow a jacket left behind by Daley Blind, as he had yet to be measured up for one of his own.

The message to the fans who serenaded him on stage at Lancashire Cricket Club alongside executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that night was clear. ‘It feels like I’ve come home,’ said Solskjaer. ‘It’s everyone’s job to enjoy themselves at United.’ The mantra has been repeated many times since.

The 45-year-old has drawn heavily on old school United values and the ethos of his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson. One minute, Solskjaer will be seen at Carrington with his arm around a player offering advice or regaling them with tales of United’s Treble season. The next, he is asking after a member of staff’s family, having remembered their names from years ago.

Amid the recent baby boom at United, Pogba was allowed to stay on the team’s charter flight back from Newcastle last month so he could travel alone to London to see his pregnant partner Maria Salaues. For the same reason, he joined up late with United’s training camp in Dubai, which Solskjaer used to bond with his squad and arranged a night out for all the players and staff at the Play Restaurant.

Everyone is made to feel part of the team. Players left out of a game are told to focus on their role in the next one. Those named among the substitutes are reminded that no one spent more time on the bench than Solskjaer.

It would be wrong to paint the Norwegian as a soft touch, though. Tough decisions have been made to leave out Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in favour of a more dynamic attacking trident of Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Even so, Martial was ordered to stay away from the Boxing Day game against Huddersfield after missing a flight back from Paris.

Those who witnessed Solskjaer’s reaction to United’s performance in the first half of their FA Cup tie against Reading realised he wasn’t joking when he claimed in an opening press conference to have ‘a hairdryer’ of his own.

And in the recent win at Fulham, he summoned Juan Mata to the touchline in the opening 10 minutes and told him to warn Phil Jones to raise his game or he would be replaced.

Always, though, the criticism quickly becomes constructive. Unlike Mourinho, Solskjaer is not one to dwell on negatives.

After last week’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, the one blot on his copybook in 13 games so far, the dressing-room door was shut for a quarter of an hour while Solskjaer addressed the players and their shortcomings on the night. As they emerged, one member of staff was heard to say, ‘now that’s what I call coaching a team’.

Solskjaer is not afraid to listen and learn from others. He was seen scouting the opposition at PSG with one assistant, Mike Phelan, and Manchester City with another, Mark Dempsey.

Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, the two English coaches excluded from Mourinho’s final staff meeting as he took refuge behind his trusted Portuguese backroom team, are given the lead in training.

When United’s bench celebrate a goal — like Rashford’s effort from Pogba’s assist against Tottenham that was devised in Dubai — the camaraderie is plain to see.

After Solskjaer won the manager of the month award for January, he not only insisted on having his picture taken with the coaching team, but made sure it was the only one distributed by the Premier League.

Ferguson, too, has been a more regular visitor to Carrington. Solskjaer was only half-joking when he suggested letting his old boss give a team talk before the Liverpool game.

While David Moyes, in particular, seemed keen to move away from Ferguson’s methods, Solskjaer is happy to turn back the clock.

He has reintroduced the old system of players always using the gym before training

For instance, players are once again required to wear club suits on matchdays and use the gym before training, which always focuses more on United’s strengths than those of their opponents.

The exercise bike installed in the manager’s office by Mourinho has disappeared and the door remains permanently open. ‘To players, coaching staff, the cleaner, you name it,’ said one insider.

Solskjaer has wasted no time vacating the Lowry Hotel that hosted his predecessor for so long. He has moved to an apartment in Cheshire while his wife Silje and their three children live in Norway. Solskjaer is not comfortable being apart from them, but the situation makes sense while his future is up in the air.

If he can mastermind another win over Liverpool, it might become clearer sooner rather than later.
