Andy Murray has been beaten in straight sets by Taylor Fritz of the United States in the first round of the National Bank Open in Toronto.

The pair were initially scheduled to play on Monday but a four-hour rain delay saw the match moved to Tuesday.

Fritz was nearly flawless in the first set, unleashing his unique mix of power and finesse to put the former world number one from Scotland on the back foot.

Murray fought hard in the second, but could not solve the puzzle the towering American presented in their first career meeting and smashed his racket against the court at several points in frustration.

‘It’s an honor to be on the court with Andy,’ Fritz said afterwards. ‘Just to get the chance to play him, he’s been around and been dominating since before I came on tour. It’s an honor.

‘I haven’t always played well this time of the year, before the US Open, so it feels really good that this year, it just seems different. I could serve just a little bit better but from the ground I felt great.’

World No 13 Fritz will take on fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the second round of the competition.

Tiafoe battled back from a set down to see off Benjamin Bonzi 6-7(6) 7-5 6-3.

China eases restrictions for international Covid flight suspensions

China shortened the length of suspensions for inbound airline flights that carry passengers infected with Covid-19, the latest sign the nation may be ready to ease virus-control measures for international travelers.

Authorities changed the so-called circuit-breaker mechanism for airline bans, cutting to one week the period that incoming flights will be suspended if they carry five Covid-positive passengers, or 4% of the total, according to a statement posted on website of Civil Aviation Administration of China. Flights that arrive with 8% of passengers infected will be halted for two weeks.

The change, starting now, is aimed at promoting personnel exchanges between China and foreign countries, and foreign exchange and cooperation, while “scientifically and accurately” achieving epidemic prevention and control, according to the statement.

In June, China reduced quarantine times for inbound travelers by half, its biggest shift in a Covid-19 policy that has left the world’s second-largest economy isolated as it continues to try and eliminate the virus.

Air travel witnesses strong passenger demand in June, says IATA

The post Air travel witnesses strong passenger demand in June, says IATA appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced passenger data for June 2022 showing that the recovery in air travel remains strong. Total traffic in June 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was up 76.2% compared to June 2021, primarily propelled by the ongoing strong recovery in international traffic. Globally, traffic is now at 70.8% of pre-crisis levels.

Domestic traffic for June 2022 was up 5.2% compared to the year-ago period. Strong improvements in most markets, combined with the easing of some Omicron-related lockdown restrictions in the Chinese domestic market, contributed to the result. Total June 2022 domestic traffic was at 81.4% of the June 2019 level.

International traffic rose 229.5% versus June 2021. The lifting of travel restrictions in most parts of Asia-Pacific is contributing to the recovery. June 2022 international RPKs reached 65.0% of June 2019 levels.

“Demand for air travel remains strong. After two years of lockdowns and border restrictions people are taking advantage of the freedom to travel wherever they can,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Asia-Pacific airlines had a 492.0% rise in June traffic compared to June 2021. Capacity rose 138.9% and the load factor was up 45.8 percentage points to 76.7%. The region is now relatively open to foreign visitors and tourism which is helping foster the recovery.
