Trivago Considers Adding Free Links Like Google Did

You can expect to see wider adoption of the free links in metasearch that Google started in 2021. More hotels means more site visitors, and eventually revenue.

Will Trivago, a hotel price-comparison site based in Germany, add free links from hotels and online travel agencies like Google did in 2021? CEO Axel Hefer dropped several hints that such a scenario could be looming.

In a Skift interview Wednesday, Hefer said Trivago would consider adding free links on Trivago to supplement paid links from advertisers, but he declined to comment on whether such plans were in the works. In theory, he said, the broader comprehensiveness that free links could generate would be particularly useful in Europe, where independent hotels, and not chains, dominate.

The free links might attract a larger number of travelers using Trivago to shop for deals.

Booking Holdings and Expedia Group, which is Trivago’s controlling shareholder, are Trivago’s dominant advertisers. Some 81 percent of Trivago’s referral revenue in the second quarter came from Booking Holdings brands (52 percent) and Expedia Group brands (29 percent).

On so-called metasearch sites such as Google Hotels, Kayak and Trivago, travelers search for hotels, and click on an array of links to book their stays with an online travel agency or hotel. Metasearch sites make their money when advertisers bid in auctions to get their links placed higher or lower in a hotel listing, and they pay the metasearch site when travelers click on those links.

But Google supplemented those paid links from advertisers with free links from online travel agencies and hotels beginning in 2021 as a way to entice more booking sites and hotels to participate — and to appease antitrust watchdogs and show that its supplier participants were not just huge travel companies.

For example, in this screenshot from Google Hotels, the top box labeled “Ads/Featured options” has links from four paying advertisers (the hotel website plus Booking and Expedia brands), and the links in the lower box designated “All options” are unpaid, and include links from lesser-known companies such as Bluepillow and BusinessHotels.

In Trivago’s second quarter earnings call Wednesday, Hefer called Google’s introduction of free links “actually interesting,” adding that when Trivago has free links in Google Hotels that Trivago “actually benefits from that free traffic. So for us, it is net positive from our perspective.”

More Competitive Environment

Trivago Chief Financial Officer Matthias Tillmann said the company is seeing a more competitive environment in both Google’s hotel auction, where companies bid to place their booking links, as well as in Trivago’s own auction, leading to a higher cost-per-click for advertisers in both. That means more revenue per click for Google and Trivago, respectively.

Given the relative high costs, Trivago limited its participation in Google’s auction, Tillmann inferred.

“We decided to keep our profitability targets and maybe sacrifice a little bit of volume, but focusing on traffic that is either directly profitable for us or where we do expect long-term positive returns, but we didn’t bid for traffic where we have low conviction that it would give us a nice return over a certain period,” he said.

Trivago has summer brand campaigns running on TV and online in all of its core geographies, and Hefer said these ad blitzes are out-performing its paid digital marketing efforts (on platforms such as Google.)

Trivago Shuts Its Weekend Getaways Efforts

Officials said Trivago is seeing strong summer demand, but they argued that inflation and the consequent hits to travelers disposable income could crimp travel demand later this year and potentially beyond.

Because of that new set of circumstances, Trivago announced it would discontinue efforts to sell weekend getaways, and increase its display advertising business to focus on its core hotel price- comparison business.

Trivago acquired Weekend.com in 2021 for euro 7.4 million ($7.6 million at today’s exchange rates) in a bid to start performing its own travel transactions instead of merely referring travelers to other travel companies for bookings.

But that business model experiment is done for now.

Trivago is abandoning that effort to focus on its core price-comparison offering, which it believes will become more valuable to travelers as inflationary pressures push them to search for bargains.

Impairment Charges Drove Net Loss

Trivago recorded an impairment charge of euro 84.2 million ($86.1 million) because of the changed “macroeconomic environment,” the company said, and the impairment was the deciding factor in its second quarter net loss of euro 59.8 million ($61.1 million). Total revenue in the quarter rose 166 percent to euro 101.6 million ($104.9 million)

Trivago adjusted earnings (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) rose to euro 30.3 million ($31.3 million), the highest in Trivago’s history, in the second quarter. That compared with just euro 4.3 million ($4.4 million) in adjusted earnings a year earlier when Europe’s travel recovery was just beginning.

Here’s the net worth of each person in the group that bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 BILLION

The ‘new kids on the block’ of NFL ownership are no slouches when it comes to running businesses.

Yesterday, the NFL owners approved the sale of the Denver Broncos to the Walton-Penner ownership group.

A majority of ownership goes to three people tied to the Walton family fortune created from Sam Walton’s company, Walmart.

The Broncos had been owned by the trust of the late Pat Bowlen, who died in 2019 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

This purchase makes the Broncos one of the ten most valuable franchises in the NFL, after being purchased by one of America’s richest families.

Additionally, it creates something of a professional sports monopoly in the Denver area.

In addition to this purchase, three of Denver’s other sports teams: the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Rapids of MLS are owned by Kroenke Sports and Entertainment.

That company is run by Stan Kroenke, who is married to Ann Walton, another heir to the Walmart fortune, and the main owner of the Nuggets and Avalanche.

This leaves the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball as the only team in the Denver area not owned either directly or by relation to the Walton family.

The Walton-Penner ownership group has six principal investors, with three tied to the Walton family, and three others not related to the family.

Rob Walton, age 77

Rob is the oldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton and the third richest of Sam’s children according to Forbes.

Forbes lists Rob’s net worth at $65 billion dollars, just $300m behind his sister Alice and $1.2b behind youngest brother Jim.

That valuation puts Rob as the 19th richest person in the world according to Forbes, and now makes him the richest owner of an NFL team.

Rob took over as chairman of the Walmart board of directors in 1992 after his father’s death, and ran the company until 2015, when he passed control to son-in-law Greg Penner.

Greg Penner, age 52

Penner was given the reins of Walmart by father-in-law Rob in 2015 and still currently serves as chairman of Walmart’s board.

He has an estimated net worth of over $1b and previously worked as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs.

Penner started at Walmart as a store employee before becoming CFO of Walmart Japan and being appointed to the Board of Directors in 2008.

Greg met Carrie Walton, Rob’s daughter, while attending Georgetown University and married into the Walton family.

Carrie Walton-Penner, age 51

Carrie’s role within the Walton family is heavily focused on the family foundation, which was founded in 1987.

The Walton Family Foundation has primarily focused on building and propelling the charter school movement in the United States, with Carrie becoming one of the more influential voices in the school choice issue in the country.

Carrie’s net worth is estimated to be around $5b.

Mellody Hobson, age 53

Mellody Hobson is a media personality and businesswoman, who serves various roles at investment companies and Fortune 500 companies.

Hobson is the President and co-CEO of investment firm Ariel Investments and also serves as chairwoman of Starbucks.

She also previously served as chairwoman of Dreamworks Animation before its sale to NBC Universal in August of 2016.

Hobson is a regular contributor on CBS This Morning, talking about financial issues affecting every day Americans.

She is also married to Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas.

Her net worth is estimated to be around $120m.

Dr. Condoleeza Rice, age 67

While she may be most well-known for her public service, Condoleeza Rice has a rich and heavily involved background in the world of sports.

Dr. Rice became well-known when she served as Secretary of State under former American President George W. Bush.

In doing so, she became the first black woman to serve in the position, taking over from Colin Powell.

After leaving the White House, Rice became a professor at Stanford University and branched out into the world of sports.

She was chosen as one of the 13 inaugural members of the College Football Playoff selection committee, serving from 2013 to 2016.

Rice, who grew up a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, was even rumored to be a candidate in the Browns head coaching search in 2018.

Outside football, Rice became one of the first two women to be admitted as members to the Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters tournament.

Rice has an estimated net worth of $12m.

Sir Lewis Hamilton, age 37

Statistically the greatest Formula One driver in history, Sir Lewis Hamilton was a late addition to the ownership group.

The seven time World Drivers Champion is the record holder for the most wins and pole positions in an F1 career.

The British-born Hamilton has an affinity for the state of Colorado, with a sprawling mega mansion located in Eagle County near many major ski resorts.

Hamilton has said the mountains of Colorado are where he likes to call home, saying, ‘it’s full of love and memories from people, the family that come every winter’.

Sir Lewis has a reported net worth of around $285m.

How Long Can Tour Operators Absorb Costs Vs. Prolonged Inflation?

0

[ad_1]

Skift Take

Tour operators believe inflation isn’t slowing down travel demand. But they’re fighting hard to ensure their sector’s recovery won’t take a hit if they can’t avoid passing on rising costs to consumers with limited travel budgets.

Tour operators face a delicate balance in these times of protracted inflation, growing their businesses in recovery mode but making sure their customers never recoil from sticker shock in prices of tours.

Inflation has threatened to slow down travel industry’s recovery this summer, with corporate executives warning that surging prices could dent travel spending while also impacting where meeting planners are opting to hold events.

Although inflation eased off of a 40-year high last month — dropping from a 9.1 percent annual rise to 8.5 percent, according to a report on Wednesday on the Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index — tour operator executives acknowledge that inflation presents an uncertain future for their businesses.

“Given the way global inflation and oil prices have risen this year we are just now starting to see price increases come through,” said Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel’s North American Managing Director. “(And) if the past two years have taught us anything, it is that we don’t know what’s around the corner.”

While G Adventures‘ Vice President of Product Yves Marceau emphatically states his company has never passed along a surcharge to travelers who have already booked a trip, he — like Berna — acknowledges having to absorb additional costs. Fuel is the most significant area Intrepid Travel has seen price increases, on average between 30 and 40 percent in most destinations. But Berna acknowledges rising fuel prices impact the total cost of each of Intrepid’s trips differently.

“On some trips it is as little as 0.5 percent while on other trips it might be 7 percent or 8 percent,” Berna said. “Inflation varies wildly again according to destination. In Turkey, for example, we’re seeing pretty extreme inflation which is averaging around 80 percent.”

So how much could inflation and a possible recession impact bookings for tour operators? Steve Born, chief marketing officer at the Globus family of brands, is optimistic that economic headwinds won’t dent his company’s recovery.

“Overall travel demand could be impacted if economic challenges loom, but early signs for 2023 demand show no slowing down,” Born said. “There’s such a strong overall interest in a return to international travel after years of disruption, and that won’t be stopped.”

However, Berna expresses concerns about having to navigate an uncertain environment. “There are always going to be unknowns,” he said. “The biggest unknown I’m concerned about is how this will affect community-based tourism.”

When asked to elaborate about how inflation would impact community-based tourism, Berna cited consequences of inflation — such as soaring airfares and rising oil and food prices — as factors that would reduce the purchasing power of travelers.

While Intrepid Travel hasn’t had to trim trips from its itinerary yet, Berna admits that inflation has driven the need for the company to cut expenses.

“We’ve tried to tighten (our) schedule to alleviate unnecessary relocation costs between trips,” he said. “Having a tighter schedule of trips and a more regional view allows us to operate more efficiently (and save) employee costs.

Those steps, Berna believes, are necessary for companies like Intrepid to take advantage of the pent-up travel demand.

“Efficiency is going to be key as the industry rebounds, Berna said. “We can’t simply expect our customers to cover all of the increasing costs.”
