Burnley’s clash with Tottenham is POSTPONED less than an hour before kick-off due to huge snowfall, with the undersoil heating at Turf Moor unable to help clear the pitch… despite being left on overnight!

  • Tottenham’s Premier League clash at Burnley has been postponed due to snow
  • Turf Moor staff tried to clear huge drifts off the pitch but efforts were in vain
  • Officials decided to postpone the game less than an hour before kick-off

The Premier League match between Burnley and Tottenham on Sunday has been called off because of poor weather conditions.

The two sides were set to face each other at Turf Moor in the early afternoon, but the ongoing disruption in the north of the UK because of Storm Arwen has meant the match cannot go ahead.

Despite efforts from the Burnley ground staff, thick snow has been hammering down all day over the ground and shown no sign of abating.

With the undersoil heating also struggling to cope with the snowfall – despite being switched on overnight – officials decided to postpone the match less than an hour before kick-off.

Speaking after the postponement, Burnley manager Sean Dyche said: ‘As you can see the pitch re-covers every time they clear it. The referee explained the safety angle as well so it was important to make a decision early.

‘It fell that quick and that heavy. It’s still quite strong now. (The pitch) can’t get rid of the snow that quick. It’s the lines being cleared as well – we would have to stop and clear them. It’s a joint decision with everyone concerned.

‘We were ready for the game and I made it clear if it could be played we wanted it on – as did their manager.

‘I can’t see how it could go ahead the way the pitch is at the moment.’

Spurs had been late to arrive at Turf Moor, arriving a little over an hour before kick-off, and officials had waited until both managers were present before making a final decision.

Questions will likely be asked to why Burnley, a Premier League club, did not have adequate undersoil heating facilities to shift the snow despite being on since the night before the game.

In contrast, Livingston were able to host Rangers in the Scottish Premiership earlier on Monday after ground staff were able to shift huge mounds of snow to ensure the game could happen.
