Pep Guardiola takes swipe at European Super League as he insists ‘it’s NOT sport if it doesn’t matter if you lose’… as Manchester City boss fights corner of top four challengers by saying ‘it’s not fair if teams fight and cannot qualify’

  • Pep Guardiola addressed the media for the first time since it was revealed that Manchester City are one of six English teams involved in a Super League plan
  • The City boss said ‘it is not sport’ when the competitive aspect is taken away
  • It has been stated that there would be no relegation among the founding clubs
  • Guardiola insists that if losing games has no ramifications then ‘it is not sport’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said it ‘is NOT sport if it doesn’t matter if you lose’ in his first public comments on the proposed European Super League.

City were one of six English teams confirmed on Sunday night to have signed up to the proposal for a breakaway league along with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus.

Earlier on Monday, Gary Neville suggested Man City will be the first to backtrack from the agreement and Guardiola’s comments suggested he is not in favour of a closed-shop league.

‘It’s not a sport when the relation between effort and reward doesn’t exist,’ Guardiola said.

‘It’s not a sport if success is already guaranteed. It’s not a sport if it doesn’t matter if you lose.

‘I want a competition that is as strong as possible. It’s not fair if one team fights, fights, fights to be at the top and they don’t qualify. This is what I feel.’

More to follow.
