Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, 47, hospitalised with Covid ‘as a matter of abundant precaution’ just days after he tested positive following a Legends game as cases continue to surge in his country

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been hospitalised with Covid-19 after it was announced last week he had tested positive for the virus.

Tendulkar, who will turn 48 this month, retired from the professional game in 2013 after notching a still unmatched 100 international centuries in a prolific 24-year career. 

The legendary batsman revealed he had contracted coronavirus on March 27 and was suffering with mild symptoms as infections continued to surge in the world’s second-most populated country.

But now he has announced he has been taken into hospital ‘as a matter of abundant precaution’.

His tweet read: ‘Thank you for your wishes and prayers. As a matter of abundant precaution under medical advice, I have been hospitalised.

‘I hope to be back home in a few days. Take care and stay safe everyone.

‘Wishing all Indians & my teammates on the 10th anniversary of our World Cup win.’

Tendulkar returned to the crease recently as captain of the India Legends team in a promotional event called the Road Safety World Series in Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh, which took place on March 21. 

Tendulkar posted a picture of him with ex team-mates Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan, Rohan Gavaskar and sports scientist Vaibhav Daga on a plane just days before revealing that he has contracted coronavirus. 

Last week India reported 62,258 new infections, its highest since October, taking its tally to 11.91 million. The death toll rose by 291 to stand at 161,240.
