LEAGUE ONE AND TWO ROUND-UPS: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton earn shock with over promotion-chasing Hull while Cambridge edge closer to League Two promotion thanks to prolific strike duo

  • Burton Albion beat high-flying Hull City 1-0 in Saturday’s League One action
  • New signing Jonny Smith scored a 90th minute winner to earn the shock win
  • Darren Moore’s Doncaster Rovers continued their fine form at Oxford United
  • There were wins in League Two for Cambridge, Tranmere and Newport County

LEAGUE ONE

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was one of the busiest managers last month, making a total of nine signings to help Burton find a way to beat the drop.

And just a week into February, one of them — Jonny Smith — scored a 90th-minute winner to beat automatic promotion favourites Hull 1-0.

Smith, brought in on loan from Bristol City, pounced as Hull’s defence switched off to convert Josh Parker’s cross.

The win reduced the gap between Burton at the bottom and Bristol Rovers in 20th to five points.

After only Burton’s fourth win of the season, Hasselbaink said: ‘We can control our own destiny. The players deserve a lot of praise for being the better team and actually deserving the goal.’

Doncaster made it nine victories out of 10 League games and ended Oxford’s club record nine-game winning streak with a 3-2 win.

Doncaster’s incredible form — bettered only by Manchester City in England’s top four tiers — and points haul of 24 out of a possible 30 has put them in the race for the summit.

Donny boss Darren Moore said: ‘We had to take our chances, which we did.’

Lee Bowyer challenged his Charlton side to push on after a 2-0 win at Rochdale moved them into the play-off zone. Bowyer said: ‘Now we’ve got to back this up and go on a run.’

LEAGUE TWO

Of the eight sides realistically in the race for the League Two title, Cambridge are best placed to be crowned champions.

In Paul Mullin and Joe Ironside, the league leaders have the most prolific strike partnership in the country — with 30 league goals between them.

Mullin and Ironside combined again as Mark Bonner’s men won 2-0 away at struggling Barrow.

Bonner said: ‘For us to come here and win like that gives us nice belief and confidence.

‘We’re enjoying where we are and trying to get consistency in our results.’

Tranmere are another side in form and they made it six consecutive wins in all competitions by beating Port Vale 3-1.

Veteran striker James Vaughan, 32, got two of the goals as Keith Hill’s side moved up to third.

Hill said: ‘My players are enjoying playing and nothing has been decided yet.’

Newport’s deadline-day signing Nicky Maynard — on loan from Mansfield Town —scored the game’s only goal on his debut at Grimsby

‘He’s given us a first instalment on his transfer there,’ joked Maynard’s delighted boss Michael Flynn.
