PM affirms Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago and its maritime zones
‘It is undeniable that the Republic of Mauritius is the sole State lawfully entitled to exercise sovereignty and sovereign rights in relation to the Chagos Archipelago and its maritime zones’.
The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement last evening in a televised message to the Nation on the dispute concerning the delimitation of the maritime boundary between Mauritius and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean.
The Special Chamber formed to deal with the Dispute delivered, yesterday, its Judgment on the Preliminary Objections raised by the Maldives on 18 December 2019.
The Chamber concluded that “it has jurisdiction to adjudicate upon the dispute concerning the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Parties in the Indian Ocean and that the claim submitted by Mauritius is admissible”.
