Bayern Munich 2-1 Frieberg: Thomas Muller fires winner as Bavarians survive scare to bounce back from league and cup woes to stretch lead at the top of Bundesliga to four points

Thomas Muller scored a second-half winner as Bayern Munich put their shock league and cup defeats behind them in a 2-1 victory over Frieberg.
The victory sees Bayern stretch their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to four points after RB Leipzig were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolfsburg.
The Bavarian giants were desperate to bounce back from a 3-2 defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach last time in the Bundesliga before they were dumped out of the DFB-Pokal by second tier side Holstein Kiel.

And they were ahead just seven minutes in as Thomas Muller’s delightfully deft assist fed Robert Lewandowski to turn the finish home as a snowy Allianz.
A period of dominant Bayern possession followed in the first half but they were restricted to few chances by the organised Frieberg.
The away side, who were looking to cement their place in the top half, did force Manuel Neuer into a save as Roland Sallai arrived into the box and fired towards the bottom right corner which the goalkeeper tipped round.

Serge Gnabry forced opposite goalkeeper Florian Muller into action himself as his deflected strike was instinctively, before the former Arsenal winger was forced off due to injury and replaced by Leroy Sane.
Bayern continued their dominance after the break and were left wondering how Lewandowski didn’t put them 2-0 up after his close-range follow shot rattled the bar after Muller had saved from Leon Goretzka.
Moments later the home side were punished for their missed chances, as Nils Petersen came off the bench to score with his first touch after it was helped on from a corner.

The goal saw Frieberg apply the pressure and it looked for a while that we could see a repeat of Bayern’s recent troubles, but Muller latched onto the ball in the box to clinically finish past his namesake.
They could have had to game wrapped up soon after as Lewandowski tried to fire home from a tight angle but he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Sane, who has largely disappointed since joining from Manchester City, threatened to show his form of old after a mazy run before his shot was blocked.
And Frieberg nearly punished them again in the dying embers as Petersen fired a strike against the cross-bar in acres of space before a follow-up shot was dragged wide.
