Alex McCarthy ruled out of game against Liverpool after goalkeeper tests positive for Covid-19

Southampton will be without goalkeeper Alex McCarthy against Liverpool after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Southampton’s no.1 is currently in isolation after receiving the results of his test and could also miss their FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury.

McCarthy’s absence will open the door for Fraser Forster to make his first appearance for the club since May 2019.

Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl said: ‘After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with Alex McCarthy, so he’s out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game, as he has to self-isolate for a period.

‘I think Fraser is a very good alternative,’ he said. ‘He really wants to play now and was waiting for his chance.

‘He has made a good development and, against a strong opponent, to make the debut of the season is not the worst for a goalkeeper I think, because you can immediately show up. I’m happy that he’s here and we have this alternative.’
