Manchester United ‘offer defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah new three-and-a-half-year contract’

Manchester United have presented Timothy Fosu-Mensah with a new three-and-a-half-year contract but the defender is weighing up his options following interest from foreign clubs, according to reports.

The Netherlands international will have just six months left on his Old Trafford contract when the January transfer window opens on Friday, when he will be allowed to speak with sides outside the Premier League.

And according to Sky Sports, while United have offered him the chance to stay at the club until 2024, Ligue 1 side Marseille and their Bundesliga counterparts Hertha Berlin are among those keen on signing him.

But the defender is weighing up his options after limited minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The report adds that both clubs are willing to pay a small transfer fee to sign the defender next month if that is what it takes to beat the rest of the competition.

The 22-year-old will also be available for a small compensation fee in the summer when his deal at Old Trafford expires.

Fosu-Mensah will be seeking regular first-team football whatever he decides, and that has not been the case under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made only one Premier League appearance this term, the opening day of the season against Crystal Palace

His only other appearances in 2020-21 have come off the bench twice in the Champions League group stages against Istanbul Basaksehir and RB Leipzig respectively, and made just six first-team appearances last season.

Fosu-Mensah is a product of United’s academy and has made 30 first-team appearances in total since making his first-team debut in February 2016 in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal.

The defender has also spent time out on loan at Fulham and Crystal Palace, and has made three appearances for his country after making his international bow three years ago against France.

Fosu-Mensah has made just one Premier League appearance and two in Europe this season
