Norwich 1-1 QPR: Teemu Pukki and Bright Osayi-Samuel score penalties as the points are shared at Carrow Road

  • Norwich missed out on three points after a late penalty for Queens Park Rangers
  • Teemu Pukki converted from the penalty spot for the only goal of the match
  • Bright Osayi-Samuel then equalised for the visitors with a a penalty of his own

It was honours even at Carrow Road after two second-half penalties — the equalising one for QPR coming just six minutes from the end.

Teemu Pukki’s spot-kick looked like allowing Norwich to extend their lead at the Championship summit to seven points and increase the pressure on QPR manager Mark Warburton. The Finn converted when Todd Cantwell was brought down by Dominic Ball in the 74th minute.

But Bright Osayi-Samuel earned a point for Rangers in the 84th minute, converting from the spot after Christoph Zimmermann had bundled him over.

Rangers have not won since beating Rotherham at home on November 24 and began by making sure they had plenty of bodies behind the ball.

They succeeded in their mission to stifle the league leaders for the first 45 minutes as Norwich conjured up the occasional half-chance, but Mario Vrancic was unable to hit the target and appeals for a penalty by Pukki and then Emi Buendia were ignored by referee Oliver Langford.

Tom Carroll came closest to giving the visitors the lead before the break, poking wide from Ilias Chair’s delivery. Chair, the Moroccan playmaker, was the man most likely for Rangers and forced a save from Michael McGovern in the home goal.

McGovern, the Northern Ireland international, had been deputising for injured first-choice Tim Krul but suffered a leg muscle problem of his own. He made it to half-time, having seen Lyndon Dykes flash a header wide, but had to be replaced by Daniel Barden, the Wales Under 19 international who will be 20 on Saturday.

At the other end, Seny Dieng pulled off a good save to deny Pukki, who had been played in by Cantwell. A goal was coming and Pukki squared the ball for Cantwell to tap in, only for a linesman to rule that the midfielder had strayed offside. The Norwich bench erupted in fury, claiming that replays showed the linesman had got it all wrong.

Dieng did well to deny Pukki again, this time at his near post, but was beaten when Thomas Sorensen launched a drive from the edge of the box. Rob Dickie was perfectly positioned, however, to block on the line.

Dominic Ball’s challenge on Cantwell saw referee Langford point to the spot and Pukki beat Dieng to break the deadlock, only for Osayi- Samuel to have the final word nine minutes later.
