Coach Neil Jenkins claims Wales ‘wouldn’t see’ beating England as a shock despite being underdogs for Llanelli clash after six defeats in last seven games

  • Wales ended a six-match winless run by beating Georgia 18-0 last Saturday
  • Six Nations champions England have lost just one match since the World Cup
  • Wales are backing themselves to perform against England in Llanelli on Saturday

Wales are happy to shine a light on England’s recent brilliance as they revelled in the underdog tag ahead of the clash of old foes.

While Wales under Wayne Pivac have been underwhelming, only beating Italy and Georgia in eight Tests, England have lost just once since the World Cup.

And while warning England Wales would be fired up on Saturday, Neil Jenkins lavished praise on Eddie Jones’ men.

‘England are very strong,’ he said.

‘Their defence is incredible, their work rate is incredible, they have a big kicking game, they’ve got a lot of pace out wide.

‘There’s going to be a lot of things we’ll have to deal with on Saturday otherwise we’ll come unstuck.

‘But Wales-England games throw up a lot of different things, so I’d like to think we’ll be more than ready on Saturday to match and hopefully better England in a lot of areas.

Josh Navidi could play for the first time since August

‘England is always a huge game for us. There’s no doubting that.

‘It would be a huge boost to everyone here, that’s for sure, and to the country, obviously.

‘We wouldn’t see it as a shock in here, but I’m sure the rest of the world would.

‘We’re a certain type in Wales and we would like the think we’re going to back ourselves on Saturday and we fancy our chances.

‘I’m used to being successful, wanting and expecting to win at home.’

Wales have Taulupe Faletau and Josh Navidi available for selection after their respective knee and concussion issues. Justin Tipuric continues through the head-injury protocols after he was knocked out against Georgia, but Ross Moriarty was sent back to the Dragons after injuring his ankle.

On a possible return for Navidi 13-weeks after he last played, Jenkins added: ‘He’s a world-class player, the type of guy with minimal rugby that can step up.’
