‘It was a horrible performance – we have hit rock bottom’: Emotional Gerard Pique says Barcelona need a rebuild from the bottom up after their humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final
Gerard Pique called for huge changes at Barcelona after the worst European result in the club’s history.
‘It was a horrible performance and it leaves us with a terrible feeling,’ said the defender of the 8-2 loss. ‘We have hit rock bottom.’
‘We feel embarrassed. You can’t compete as we have done tonight. This is very hard to take.’
Gerard Pique has hit out at Barcelona’s performance as they were blown away by Bayern
Referring to previous European disasters against PSG, Roma and last year against Liverpool he said: ‘And it’s not the first time, it’s not the second time, or the third time.’
Pique’s comments will be interpreted as direct criticism of President Josep Bartomeu who will now be under massive pressure to call elections even though he has a year left of his mandate.
He said: ‘The clubs need changes and I’m not talking about the coach or any one player. The club needs profound change. We have hit rock bottom. We need to reflect and do what is best for the club.’
Pique included himself in the criticism. He said: ‘I will be the first to offer to go if we need new blood.’
Coach Quique Setien said: ‘We started well but they made us suffer.’
Asked if this was the end of a cycle at the club, he said: ‘I’ve only been here six months. If Pique has said what he has said then there will be something in that. ‘Decisions will have to be made for the best for the future of the club.’
Setien has two years left on his contract. Asked about his future he said: ‘This is too soon to say if I am going to continue or not. This does not depend on me.’
