Lewis Hamilton could plummet down the grid ahead of Sunday’s Austria Grand Prix, with the Brit under investigation by the stewards.
Hamilton qualified second fastest behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas during Saturday’s qualifying session, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third.
It represented an ominous start to the season for Mercedes, but their front row lock-out could be at threat with Hamilton alleged to have exceeded track limits and – more seriously – to have ignored yellow flags.

Both possible infringements took place on Hamilton’s final run of Q3, where Bottas ran wide onto the gravel, blowing a huge cloud of dust across the track.
