Real Sociedad 1-2 Real Madrid: Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema seal crucial victory

Real Madrid turned up the heat on Barcelona with a crucial 2-1 victory at Real Sociedad, meaning Zinedine Zidane‘s side are now level on points with the Champions.

Real were awarded a penalty when Vinicius Junior was tripped by Diego Llorente. After a VAR review the spot-kick stood and Ramos cooly sent Alex Remiro the wrong way to make it 1-0.

Benzema made it 2-0 twenty minutes later, bringing down a Federico Valverde cross with his chest before going past his man to pull a low shot into the bottom left-corner.

VAR was called into action once again, this time checking if the striker had used his hand in the build up. But the goal was given and the visitors looked to be set for a comfortable victory.

But Real were dealt a blow when Ramos was forced off through injury shortly after his goal, with a worrying looking knee strap given to the defender as he watched on from the bench.

And Zidane’s side missed their captain when Willian Jose was able to beat Dani Carvajal in the air, leaving Mikel Merino free to slot in at the far post. But the lifeline proved to be just that as Real held on to claim a vital three points that see’s them go level with Barcelona at the top of LaLiga.
