Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius Prison Service recruits twenty trainee Prisons officers

The new recruits will undergo a six-month intensive training at the Prison Training School and will be exposed to basic prison duties and drills. The training will cover topics such as human rights, first aid, response to emergencies, prevention of suicide and self-harm, self-defense, customer care, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, communication skills, and listening and counselling techniques.

In his address, the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Appadoo, congratulated the trainees for embracing the profession of a Prisons Officer which according to him is a noble one. The job of Prisons Officer, he underlined requires high standard of discipline, honesty, moral integrity, commitment and be in the frontline to uphold law and order. He urged the new recruits to be responsible, demonstrate preparedness and dedication during their training as well as to cultivate a sense of belonging which will help them be successful throughout their career.

Mr Appadoo cautioned of the temptations that is present in the prisons and requested the trainees not to give in to them and to carry out their duties diligently and with utmost honesty. He made a strong plea to the parents of the trainees, present on the occasion, to continuously have a check on their children as parents have a predominant role in the overall development of a child that continues till he becomes an adult.

Moreover, he indicated that the trainees will be provided with all necessary facilities during the six-month training to empower them to cope with the exigencies of the service. He also made an appeal to the temporary Prison Officers to abide at all times to the Oath of allegiance they have sworn in and to be vigilant and daring in performing their duties since they will be serving the community in the different prisons of Mauritius.
