Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Jesse Lingard returned from injury too early as Manchester United battle a serious injury crisis totalling 10 absentees.

Lingard came off the bench against Liverpool on Sunday, only to then be forced off with a hamstring problem before half-time.

Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata are all missing for Wednesday’s trip to Crystal Palace, while Marcus Rashford has an ankle knock.

‘Martial is not going to be ready for this one,’ Solskjaer said. ‘Maybe Southampton. We’re not going to risk another one.

‘In hindsight you can say Jesse was eager. He ticked all the boxes in training but maybe it was a few days too early.

‘We’ll have a good team out definitely. It’s a chance for others. Scott (McTominay), Andreas (Pereira) did fantastic (on Sunday). You’ve got to be ready when you get it.’

Academy kids Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and James Garner are in the squad for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Solskjaer also challenged Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to step up and start living up to their reputations.

‘It’s a chance for them to play to their potential,’ Solskjaer added. ‘Their potential is high. The two of them are good mates and they link up together.

‘This might be a chance to find some form and give us a selection headache. Rom created two big chances against Liverpool. The link-up between them against Arsenal in the cup was good.

‘The kids been part of our training for a long time now. Angel’s been in that successful England U17s, the 2017 team with Sancho, Foden and Hudson-Odoi, he’s been a big part and definitely shown he’ll do well.

‘Garner is a Michael Carrick but 20 years younger, I’m sure he’ll do well and Chongy will be taking people on if he comes on.’
